Here we go again!
New pinkie
Weighs 15g
Clicking when I took her in. Finder fed with an eyedropper.
I have Cipro already diluted from when Miss Click was sick. I need information on dosing and whether that same cipro is still good.

Call Rhapsody or Mel, whomever you are closet to and see
if they have Cipro.
If she aspirated, time is of the essence.

I made the homemade rehydration fluid -again- and have given one dose of that. Pinkie doesn't readily swallow. it took a long time to get .75 mL down her (5% body weight). I don't think all of it went in, either. She was really sticky when I was finished.
My understanding is: every 2 hours, for about eight hours. Is that right? Then 3:1 water:Esbilac ratio for a day (give or take) Eight hours from now will be bedtime. I can give a bedtime feeding along with all the others. I'm inclined to skip night feeding, because ,,, let's face it, folks, I'm exhausted. But if you think she can't survive a night without formula, I will get up. Somewhere in one of my threads, someone said that an old time, very experienced rehabber "never" does night feedings, and that she was shocked to discover that from that person. I don't remember who said that, but it's food for thought.

I would give a night time feeding until this little one stabilizes a bit. I usually do night feedings for my pinkies until they are 30 grams as long as they are progressing well. I do have some friends that have been rehabbers for 30+ years. One gives night feedings until they reach 25 grams the other does not do any night feedings. She feeds at midnight and then feeds again at 5:30 am. Her babies are fat rolly poly little things. I think it really depends on the baby's condition. For your little one I would at least offer hydration or formula through the night. As soon as she stabilizes, you are the best judge as to what is best for your baby.:Love_Icon You are doing a great job.:w00t

In the ensuing insanity, I somehow placed my really nice Escali kitchen scale on the burner that had been on, warming formula. So now it's melted, I have no scale - let alone a really NICE scale - and I guess I'm just over the edge with this, maxed out, because I just started crying over it, which really made my husband mad (he's stressed over this situation, too), so he's at Walmart, trying to find SOMETHING we can weigh these babies with, and I'm here, hydrating the thumb-sized pinkie again. This 15g pinkie is maybe the straw that broke the camel's back. Again everybody says "be careful what you wish for!"
I will get up with the baby. We have had another death in the family, have another funeral tomorrow. heavy sigh

Terri, you do have to take care of you. I have done this for 17 years and I know what it is to be overwhelmed. Can you transfer this baby to someone?? At least for a few days. I wish I was close enough to help. Don't do the night feeding. Do a feeding as late as possible and get some uninterrupted hours of sleep. You need it. I was unaware of your family situation when I recommended the night feeding. :Love_Icon I am sorry to hear of the death in your family. :grouphug:Love_Icon:grouphug

I did get up with the pinkie, she seems basically well, but I don't have much to compare her to, so I can't say for sure. She's SO tiny, it's hard to get anything into her, but she does seem to be getting the hang of it. I accidentally ordered some of the really small Miracle nipples early on, they were never used, and I'm so glad I have them now.
I was hoping someone could take her right away, but that is seeming unlikely. Maybe if I can get her past pinkie stage, someone would be more interested. By then, I will probably be too attached, though.
For anyone reading this, it was decided through PM that I would use the Cipro I already had, because no "new" Cipro was available immediately. I got dosing instructions and gave the first dose at 7:30 last night. I just realized that I didn't give the probiotic! I hope she'll be ok without it. I'll give it when I get up for next feeding, that should about 2 hours-ish before the next dose.
Gonna try to grab a little sleep now, maybe 45 minutes before I have to do another feedings. :klunk

Terri, sorry I'm late to the party (because I was partying all day yesterday :dance) but I think it was me who mentioned the very experienced rehabber who never does night feedings. She is someone who lives in my area, and often gives talks at NY State Rehabber conferences. She swears her pinkies are fine without it; I personally don't subscribe to this methodology because when pinkies are in the nest they can nurse any time they wish, and mamma hardly leaves them during those first two weeks. So...I get up. Maybe not afte 2-3 hours, maybe after 4, but I never make them wait longer than that until they are about 2 wks old.
Here's a tip to get pinkies to eat: make sure she's nice and warm, then hold her against your throat and purr like a cat for a minute or so. If your hair is long enough, put her face up in your hair as well. The purring sound and your hair will trigger her "Mamma's here!!" instinct, and you'll see her little mouth start moving.....she will eat SO much better. It's not infallible, but it works a lot of the time.
Good grief, Terri -- one minute you're a newbie with Miss Click, and now you're a rehabber! :rotfl :rotfl :grouphug

I didn't get fresh, I used a dilution I had for Click, it was decided that old Cipro was better than none.
I hope someone can take her. I want her, and I'll be sad to lose her, but I really am maxed out. Really. I already thought I did nothing but feed squirrels, but now I REALLY do nothing but feed squirrels. My husband has been great, but I can sense a shift in the tolerance, and he is getting maxed out too. I can meet anywhere if you find a good squammy for her.
She's sweet. She's not peeing much, has loose stool (all the usual), so I'll start hydrating between feedings as much as I can. I had a good feeding at 9, but at 12 she is back to not wanting much - I guess also to be expected because of the pneumonia. However, she had a pretty impressive milk line even with only taking half of what I had prepared. Is it OK to give some pepto to one this small? I remember giving it to Click, but she was much larger and I think a lot older too.

I love her. Enough to let her go to someone else who is responsible and will love her. My attention is so divided already with five, and she requires - deserves - some special TLC. William doesn't know what to make of the water works. I'm so tired and I get a little weepy when I'm tired, and then add this little dolly to that, and, well, he just doesn't know what to make of it all. "If you wanna keep her, KEEP HER!" But it isn't that simple. You understand, I'm sure.
And did I mention I have a 17 year old son? Well, he's another factor. I don't only have five squirrels, I have a teenager, and all that that implies, so it's the right thing to let this Pinkie go. Still sad. Still relieved.

Hey all!
We were determined to take a break from this whirlwind of squirrel raising this year with trying to build a couple businesses but plans are meant to be changed right...... :grin2
We received a pinky about 4 days ago that was cat caught with pneumonia. He turned the corner yesterday and looks like he will be fine thankfully! I'm a big believer in these guys having a partner in crime to grow up with so I agreed to take this other Pinky when Patti asked.
My question is how is the Pneumonia going? Any positive progress on it?

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. Things were a little hairy yesterday. I've had five straight hours of sleep and feel like a new woman.
Patti gave me directions to mix up SMZ, which I had and didn't know it til I was on the phone with her, and Pinkie had her first dose this morning. Last night, when Patti called, I had JUST given a dose of Cipro, so I didn't wanna OD her. She was still clicking this morning, but it was very sporadic and slight, I honestly think it was just that other clicking they make. She was getting better with the Cipro, it just wasn't happening as dramatically fast as usual. So she's on the fresh SMZ now and I have every reason to expect she's making a full recovery.
She gained 2g since yesterday. She'd lost a gram the first night, was 14 yesterday, up to 16 this morning.

Pinkies nearly always lose a gram or two the first night. Remember that when they are with mamma they can feel around and have a snack every ten minutes if they want to. All of a sudden they are with us, and we can just about manage every 2-3 hours -- of course they lose weight. Sounds like this new little 'clickie' is on the right track. :serene

Yep. I remembered that. I wasn't "worried."
She must be feeling better. She is eating readily now. Yesterday, it was taking more than half an hour to get .7 mL down her. She just took .8 in about ten minutes. She is latching on to the little nipple, perfect fit.
I feel silly now for being such an alarmist, but I still think letting her go to Coralreefer is the right thing to do. I don't want to get overloaded. I keep thinking that I'm being a wuss, but I remind myself that seven weeks ago was the first time I'd even thought about taking care of a squirrel. I'm still new at this. I hope nobody thinks I'm crapping out. :sniff
I love the age the four babies are right now, but I'm with you, I really prefer to start with a pinkie. Love me some Miss Click. I don't know if I would want FOUR pinkies, though! You realize that's what's next, right? LOL
Last night, William said "If this pinkie had come along and you just had Clicker, it would be absolutely no problem..." and that's right. Feeding five squirrels has almost completely monopolized my time, and I can't give up what little is left if there is another option.
THANK YOU, CORALREEFER!

I wonder if I should have just kept using the "old" Cipro? She seemed better this morning. Then I switched her. I don't know what to do. Last night, she was still clicking (she'd had three doses of Cipro). Patti thought we should mix up SMZ, and called me with dosing information. At first feeding this morning (5:30), I was fairly certain she was not clicking (she wasn't given SMZ until 7:30 this morning), she seemed a lot better, wasn't clicking all day, up til the 3:30 feeding. I'm not sure what's right.

Patti really knows her stuff when it comes to the medicines for these guys.
She's well versed in what they all do.
If you gave her a treatment at 7:30 this morning you can give her nightly dose now.
I have plenty of SMZ that I can continue her treatment with.
Unless she's suddenly gotten to a critical level my thought would be to continue with the switch.
Does she still have her appetite?

Her appetite is good. She took all of her formula tonight. I'm gradually transitioning her to 2:1 (water:esbilac) formula, and she should be ready to go full strength by the time you get her. She's doing really well. A couple of times today, she has used her front paws to push away the syringe, but tonight, she took it all. Even when she's declined the syringe, her milk line has been really good. One feeding, I kinda pushed the formula, and then her belly and milk line were huge, and I worried I'd messed up, but she was fine at the next feeding.
Patti said to give both ABs, staggered, so that's what I'm going to do. Pinkie had Cipro before last feeding, and I wlll give SMZ before next feeding. Patti said to do that a couple of times until the SMZ has time to gain strength in her system. I'll send the Cipro with her (as well as the SMZ) just in case.
Thank you again!

Patti had a family emergency and can't make it tonight, but no worries. Tom and I are going to meet on the interstate so Little Pinkie can get to her new home and new sister.

Well, they just keep finding me and finding me.
This little guy was raised by my husband's coworker from pinkie stage. She is looking for a good home for him. I've seen other pix from earlier days and he looks real healthy in all those pix. This is the most recent pic:

We have already told her that we will take him. I'm concerned she would release him too young if we don't, because she's ready to find him another home now. I will be HAPPY to share. Anybody want this boy? Cesta? Where have you gone?

So basically you have gone from someone who never touched a squirrel to the largest squirrel rehabber in the southeast...since July!!! LOL. I have always sworn that animals in need can sense the right place to go for it, but your sign can be SEEN FROM SPACE!

I'm so relieved that you're able to work this out. I received a call at work that my mom was being taken to the ER. She's 84 and has a 'bad' heart so I always sorta freak out when I get 'that' call. She's admitted and appears stable.
Terri, that is the age that Chris was looking for... an eyes closed older baby. I'll call her and let her know.

Oh Patti I'm so sorry to hear about your Mom.
I'm glad that she appears stable.
Many prayers being sent for Mom.

New Brother and Sister have hit it off.
They literally are the exact same size.
They have both been medicated, fed and are cuddled up for the night.
As Terri eloquently stated earlier her little girl now has a Brudda from a nudda Mudda.
Thanks Terri and Patti for finding this little boy a partner!
Patti even with her mother headed to the hospital was still messaging us both to make sure these to were united today.
Patti you are too much!
Great to hear your mother is doing better!

OMG THEY ARE SO CUTE TOGETHER!!! They're perfect for each other.
Thank you, Tom. I'm so glad that y'all could take that baby and that you are so glad to have her. It was really nice to meet you.
When William came home to the vacant crate, he was sad, and I told him if he'd met you, he wouldn't be sad. I showed him the pictures that you sent to me, and his heart was warmed.
Things are calm around here for the moment, and I'm enjoying the lull. LOL I say "lull" because I'm sure someone is out there, gonna rattle my cage real soon.
