I'm not an expert, but have witnessed that sort of response from scared squirrels. I would try responding by calmly and gently telling the squirrel that everything is okay, and if possible, placing him in a quiet warm room, possibly covering all but one side of the cage. A nice pile of fleece, flannel or old t-shirts would likely be welcome so he can burrow and feel even safer until he realizes he is in a safe place.
