View Full Version : BROKEN UPPER INCISOR TOOTH-WHAT TO EXPECT
Trooper

My 5 years old male eastern gray Trooper, has a half-broken upper incisor tooth. You can still see about 1/16" below the gum line the broken edge of his left incisor tooth. what should I do for him: curtail all hard nuts or items that he could chew on to prevent further wear and tear? Provide only soft foodstuffs? Nothing at all?
Your valuable advice, will be appreciated.

Is only one of the teeth broken? You don't want to prevent the one longer one from overgrowing so I wouldn't curtain hard foods. Is there any chance you could clip the longer toothe to even them up?

Hi Sammysmom: thank you for replying and sorry for my late comeback. Yes it is "his" right side upper incisor (the left one from the viewers point of view). Attached are some pics. The broken tooth is also split lengthwise and the crack of the split runs up to the gum line.
The other tooth is O.K. but shorter on account that is the only one he has to wear down on his nuts and mazuri, antlers, etc., so there is no need to trim the good one as it is already shortened. I guess I should wait and see how it grows. His behavior and appetite is normal and he doesn't seem to be bothered by it. He chews on his nut with his good side tooth, so he seems to know the right one is non operational.
Probably I shouldn't worry for the time being, right?
Thanks,
Trooper's dad

Keep an eye on them because this will make the
bottom one under the broken tooth get longer
than the other bottom tooth. You might have
to clip a little until the top tooth grows back out.

Hi Lilidukes; good point, hadn't thought of that. I suppose this is something I can do myself, at his age (5), since Trooper is just not friendly with anyone but me about handling him and trying to clip his teeth, well I rather be in hell when that happens, as it will be more comfortable there that trying to wrestle him! I did some teeth trimming on other female squees when they were babies and their teeth were growing sideways. They were tame and their teeth smack and tender.
I assume a 5 years old male teeth are quite hard and I should do it with a small side cutter tool, like those used in micro-electronics for cutting wires? Is there a "dentine" or root nerve to be aware of in rodents incisor teeth?
Thanks for the advise!

You will just have to do a quick nip even with the
other bottom tooth No guessing where to cut.
If you don't even them you take the chance of
the bottom breaking.
Then you will be trimming for a long time.
You wont hear me say this often give him lots
of nuts in shell, tree branches fresh cut etc!!!
Just for the next month or so. It's possible
he can/will even the teeth up himself.
i use wire cutters these are cheap and very sharp
