Quick question...
The label on the back of the Fox Valley Electro-stat package, talks about "...gradually introducing milk formula...according to the following schedule." then it proceeds to say to mix the electro-stat solution with liquid milk formula.
Is it fine to mix electrolytes with proteins? or is Nick mistaken?
hoping to hear your opinions.
thanks!

I believe Nick is mistaken if that's what it says .
I did not think milk was supposed to be mixed with electrolytes

Here is from the FV website on Electro-Stat:
For introducing Milk Formulas:
Electro-stat can be used to introduce milk formula to neonates.
After rehydration, gradually introduce the milk formulas over a period of 24 to 48 hours.
gradually introduce milk formulas to the neonate according to the following schedule.
3/4 part Electro-Stat solution + 1/4 part liquid milk formula
1/2 part Electro-Stat solution + 1/2 part liquid milk formula
1/4 part Electro-Stat solution + 3/4 part liquid milk formula
Somewhere here on TSB I read an excellent discussion that made a lot of sense on why one SHOULD NOT mix electrolyte solutions with formula... lemme see if I can find it...
Edit: There are many posts on TSB advising not to mix protein (formula) with electrolytes, but post #17 here is the one I was recalling:

I have to say that IMHO, Nick at FV is mistaken with this one. I use Electrostat on its own, never mixed with formula.
(janiemcm, I just got home and saw your PM; sorry for the delay. :) )

I didn't think so either and was really surprised to read that on his label. Thanks Mommaluvy.:blowkiss:blowkiss

Spanky - that posting is one that I printed out years ago. It always made sense to me. I just couldn't figure how Nick could make such a mistake. I thought maybe I'd missed a "memo" saying that it was all of a sudden O.K. to mix electrolytes and protein.
2 years ago, I e-mailed Erica Miller to get her take on it...but never heard back. :dono Maybe I will try again. If I hear, I'll definitely let you know.

And IR- thanks for the response. Hearing from the 3 of you has reconfirmed what I thought to be true - But then I read Nick's label AND this post from March, 2015:
http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?49709-SHORTCUT-METHOD-OF-FLUID-CALCULATION&p=1085518#post1085518
so I started wondering all over again.
Thanks again for helping to clear this up for me!:hug

I believe I may have first heard about NOT mixing the two from Shirley Casey, in her 2-day Squirrel Intensive course at one of our state wildlife conferences years ago. She explained the science behind it as well, hypertonic vs hypotonic.

The IWRC manual advises against it as well.
I "think" it was written by dr Erica Miller???? Or was that the hydration protocol .
