I have noticed a red sore place on my squirrel's chest area under his right arm. It is a little bit oozy and I have no idea what it is. He hasn't been out of his three story cage to get into anything, not sure if a bug maybe has gotten in. His cage is inside. I've looked up pics of pox and it doesn't look like that to me. I will try and attach a picture I took of it. I did put some hydrogen peroxide on a cotton ball and tried to clean it.

Hard to tell what may have caused that, is there anything in cage he could be rubbing on?
No more Peroxide! It can destroy healthy tissue. You can get a Benidine solution and dilute
a mixture with water until it looks like weak tea to clean it with and then apply an ab cream
to the area.

Where can I find a Benadine solution and by ab cream do you mean a basic antibiotic cream like neosporine?

"Betadyne" is 10% povidone iodine and is with the wound stuff at the drug store (feel free to buy the generic - same stuff). Put about 20 drops in a quarter cup of water and use that to clean the area - I would do it at least twice a day. Yes, you can use a little bit of Neosporin on it as well. The povidone iodine is both anti-bacterial and anti-fungal so it covers a lot of skin issues.

Thank you! I'll go get that now and try it.

When I looked up "Benadine" "Betadine" popped up, but I also noticed there is something called Benadine and it's something used for dogs with "hot spot" which I was actually familiar with from one of my dogs years ago. Not sure how I would get that, it's "benzalkonium chloride"... Is that what my first responder meant? Would either of these solutions work? The Betadine I can find, not sure about the Benadine. Maybe that's available at pet stores?

My spelling is probably off... Betadine or Betadyne would be correct.
It may come under different spellings or product name but should say povidone iodine.
Easily found most drug stores.

Have you felt around the area for any sort of a lump or a mass in the surrounding tissue?

I haven't really touched it because it is so raw. He was very unhappy with me when I did my best to use the solution on it, I'm not sure how much I was able to manage to get on it. I will try to check later, just warned him to settle down...

Can you try to get a closer pic of this?

The betadyne doesn't hurt, BTW, as long as you dilute it like I wrote earlier. I usually warm solutions like that so they are as close to their body temp as possible - so they aren't being hit with hot or cold in addition to WET!

How long has he had this?

About a week and a half ago and frankly I don't know how it's going to go when I try this again...so frustrating I'll try a closer pic tomorrow

I would use SSD cream and sugar. No Neosporin ..as it will keep it too wet.

The inside of the sore has an unique pattern, and the pattern may help to identify or diagnose it.

I have to say though, just at a glance the sore reminded me of a "hot spot" that's often seen on dogs. Could it be something similar to that? I'm not sure if hot spots are caused from the constant licking or the constant licking is caused by the hot spot... but you'd think there would be a reason for the dog to constantly lick that spot! lol... :gig And from my own experience, treatment for the hot spot only works when the dog stops licking it! I've used a product called "Bitter Apple" (tastes awful!) on hot spots to stop the licking... and with frequent use the dog would stop licking and it would eventually heal. :w00t

Is the squirrel licking the spot?

Sorry, when I looked back at the close-up picture there seems to definitely be a unique pattern... and I think that's a major clue as to what this is.

I don't know, but I think it's a larger area than it was. He's not acting quite himself may be mad from yesterday, I can't get him to really come out of his box except if I offer food and then I wouldn't be able to mess with it because he would be eating. My only other thought was maybe spraying the solution on it when I get him to raise up at the side waiting for a treat...but after a few times doing that, he will probably be wise to what I'm about to do.

And yes I've seen him lick it. I'm really thinking I could get it on there with a mini spritz bottle while he stands up at the side of the cage for a nut.

Are you unable to hold and play with this squirrel?

Squirrelgranny

I can play with him, but he wasn't happy with what I did yesterday putting the cotton ball with the solution on him, he's guarded about that spot and was upset. I don't think he will let me try that again. I did dilute it properly but he just was not happy at all.
