Ornamentle Pears

Is it ok for squirrels to eat the little ornamental pears? Seems like I have seen them eating them in the wild years back. I ran across a tree loaded and picked a few, but before giving one to Sally I just wanted to make sure.

I wouldn't. Read the part about pets and pears.

Wilds build up resistance to small amounts of toxicity in foods by eating it regularly, so even though I see wilds eating these I wouldn't give them to my baby.

Bobby, I would not. We have two of these trees on the property -- they are very popular in this area. I gave them to a squirrel I was rehabbing many years ago and he spent the entire night crying and having horrible diarrhea. Never again.

So even if you take the core and seeds out of pears it's still bad??? I have a pear tree and give pieces and branches and leaves to chew on. I do remember seeing on the nutrition chart or I would not have given it. I am very careful and strict with what I give him.

I know what's healthy:grin2 The squirrels get it, not me! I'm more of a cheap Raman noodle girl after the critters get all the expensive greens :grin3

My neighbor has a tree of pears that look like the ornamental ones, but about the size of your fist. And she eats them. Anyone have any thoughts?
