View Full Version : Swollen anus 3-4 week grey squirrel
Hi, today I noticed that my 3-4 week grey squirrel anus is pretty swollen and and his belly looks bigger than usual. He had minor diarrhea after I put some heavy whipping cream in his formula (Esbilac Powder for Puppies) so I made a new batch without it. He seems slightly dehydrated after I did the skin test, what should I do?

Can you post a picture of him, that would be very helpful.
Can you see a milk line?
How often are you feeding?
Are you mixing the formula 1 part Esbilac to 2 parts water?
I also suggest that you let it sit in the refrig after mixing for a few hours or more.
I actually put mine in small container and freeze them.
Make sure to shake or stir it up really well before loading the syringes.

Do you know how much he weighs?
How much are you feeding him?

Just to make sure... at 3-4 weeks they still need to be stimulated to poop and pee.
Are you helping him take care of business? :tilt
The big belly is concerning. Are you feeding 5-7% of his weight?
All baby squirrels will over eat if you let them. You have to cut them off at 5-7% or they can bloat.

Last I weighed him (which was a couple days ago) he weighed 46 grams so I've been feeding him 2 ccs per feeding every 4-5 hours

Yes, I've been stimulating him with a warm paper towel, if he doesn't poop or pee I put him in warm water and massage his belly until he does.

I tried to upload a picture but it's not letting me, his belly had gone down quite a lot since I last checked on him.

You're heating the formula up until it's very warm? 2cc is actually a little less than 5% and 4-5 hours is a little longer than I usually go, so it shouldn't be over feeding. You have him on heat set on low?

Iheat the formula tills it's pretty warm, and I have a heating pad on half of his cage set on low
He had a little more diarrhea when I checked on him

The heating pad is right under the surface he is on, right? No grate holding him away from the floor of the cage?

Be sure to keep him hydrated. Diarrhea is very dehydrating.

Ok should I feed him when he stops having diarrhea

I've given a baby Pepto Bismol or Infant Immodium when He had bad diarrhea. Won't actually cure the runs, just give his tummy a chance to reset and sooth his system. Do you have Diastat? Sorry if somebody already mentmioned it. Just peeking in after the babies are fed. Good luck with your little guy.

Yeah it's under a couple layers of sheet bedding

I don't know if anyone mentioned this, but if he still has diarrhea and seems dehydrated, it would help to offer pedialyte BETWEEN feedings. The pedialyte can be given for 24 hrs.
