I found our squirrel on the sidewalk on 7/28/2016. He had no teeth and no hair on his belly as of yet which led me to conclude he was between two and three weeks. He is currently growing his bottom teeth. I immediately provided him with pedialyte and watched as his stool shifted from a very dark brown, to an orange and then a mustard yellow. After several applications of pedialyte and a steady schedule of urination was developing, he was put on esbilac. After a day on the esbilac formula I incorporated heavy whipping cream to the formula mix. A mix of soft stool (still mustard yellow) and diarrhea ensued the following day. I put him back on plain esbilac without cream, diluted it with 50% water and put him on a schedule of 1cc diluted formula one hour and 1cc pedialyte the next, alternating every hour. This is now the second day I have done this yet have not seen any improvements/changes. I am hoping for some advice. Thank you.

Is your Esbilac the canned liquid or powdered kind?

Powdered

Is there a foul odor to the diarrhea?

Slightly. It's not terrible, but it's not odorless

I would stop using the cream in the Esbilac. Make sure the formula is mixed in advance and sits in the fridge for a few hours before feeding.

Stop the pedialyte and switch to hydrating with plain water between feedings if additional hydration is still needed.

Are you providing him heat?

Here is a link with lots of good information:

At 50 grams he should be getting 2.5ml of formula (you are warming it?) every 3-4 hours.

Their little bodies take some adjusting when they switch from mommy milk to formula...

:thankyou for helping him and :Welcome to TSB!

I stopped using the cream yesterday morning. The formula is mixed at night, stays refrigerated and isn't used until the following morning. I heat the formula to body temp before feeding. He was being fed 2.5cc every three hours. I read that diluting the formula and providing it in smaller amounts more regularly could aid in the digestive process. He has in total been receiving 2.5cc of fluid every three hours. I will try water instead of pedialyte though. And yes, his box is half on a heating pad at low temp.

We try not to change around the formula they are getting since the little one's (up to about 4 weeks) have a hard time adjusting to the changes. Was the pedialyte orange colored by chance (was it Gatorade?).

Has he pooped recently? Are you stimulating for pottying with each feeding?

Negative. Plain pedialyte. No flavors or alternate colors and not gatorade. And yes. I am stimulating him to use the facilities hourly after each feeding, both for the formula and pedialyte (now water).

also, should I be feeding him overnight?

I would feed overnight. Also, remember if he is getting a lot of water compared to formula, his stool will likely be looser. You could try adding a bit of baby food sweet potato. Make sure it is just the potato not any other crap added.

I will try that thank you. Any quantity recommendations? Or just until he's satisfied? Also I just ordered the fox valley 32/40 however I read some pretty disturbing reviews on one of the threads here. What's the story with that stuff?

In a nutshell, the formula has been BAD for 3 years now.
It sat like cement in their little tummies, they were unable to digest it.
Many seasoned rehabbers lost most of their pinkies.
And Anne a LONG time rehabber lost all of her pinkies that year. :shakehead

Here's a link, and a picture of one of my little ones
that was unable to digest this ****. They stay bloated and eventually
starve to death.
He passed about an hour after the photo was taken. :boohoo
In the white circle sat undigested Fox Valley formula 32/40!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cancel the order or send it back. If it hasn't shipped, have them change it to the 20/50 - he won't be using that YET but in a month he will. Many people here find that a 50/50 blend of esbilac and the FV 20/50 is a good combo for the older babies.

If you are building a deck, you could use the 32/40 to replace the cement normally used to pour the footings...:shakehead
