Sorry for another new thread. My wild pet is injured in the mouth and the last thing I want to do is make her sick from bad food.

My question:

I ordered Wild Bites from Henrys. To no fault of Henrys, they were shipped around 2pm on July 25th, but I got them around noon on July 28th. It's been very hot over here, in the 90s. Do you think they are still good?

PS - I also got calcium carbonate powder that I will start mixing in with her peanut butter since that seems to be all she'll eat given her mouth injury, etc.

Admin - If you really feel that this belongs in my emergency thread instead, feel free to move it. My thought is that this post goes here as to not bury the the life-threatening emergency going on.

One of the nicest people in the world is Leigh, the lady who owns Henry's Healthy Pet. Why don't you call her tomorrow and get the info straight from the horses mouth.

You are correct. She is nice. I have spoken with her before. I am very grateful for such a helpful and needed company. To answer the question of why I didn't call her, it was after hours and I wanted to serve these ground up with almond butter, calcium carbonate, and apple sauce to Buddy for breakfast. And we all know squirrels wake up early!

Just get them into the fridge and they should be fine.

Can Squirrels Have CASHEWS? I bought raw walnut butter, but the second ingredient is cashews.

Rocky,
I have already talked with Leigh about this, because on my first order ever of block, I never even knew they were supposed to be put into the fridge... With the crazy feeding schedule I never took the time to read the label :-0 First time squirrel mom....quite the learning curve.

So when I finally read the label that they were to be refrigerated upon arrival, I called Leigh immediately. Bottom line, the issue is that the un-refridgerated block will grow mold. It will be white mold (I'm pretty sure I remembered that correctly) and cover the pieces, it will start with just small specs of it. It is very obvious, so don't over examine looking for white dust...

If the blocks don't have mold on them, they are completely fine. It is the mold that is the problem. It takes over a week or more for the mold to grow. I got to see this, because I did leave them out on the counter, they did not have mold when I finally put them in the fridge, but a little after that in the fridge, they grew mold because of how long I had them out. Now I put them in the freezer as soon as they arrive and take out what I need a few at a time. I have never ever had mold again.

Since yours were out for a while, consider putting them in the freezer, and all should be completely fine.

Cashew?

In VERY small quantities, and not often. Cashews are very high in phosphorous, I believe.
