I have a male gray squirrel named Samson. He has been with me since last August when I was given his sister and him. He was a week old when I got them. His sister died several hours after bringing them home but this guy made it and is happy and healthy. He is a sweetheart and I love him to pieces. I live in a residential neighborhood and was hoping to do a soft release in my yard and that he would find his way to the forest across the street. He was in the release cage for a month before I opened the door and then came back nightly for approximately 10 days before disappearing for over a week. I was really happy and thought all was well but one day he returned home tired and hungry. We snuggled then I fed and watered him and put him in his cage to sleep safely for the night. The next day he seemed fine and I opened the door for him again. He left willingly but it was at this point the neighbors decided they loved him and despite my repeated warnings they started feeding him nuts and other junk. Now he just refuses to leave. Yesterday this neighbor who loves him came to tells the other neighbor is attempting to catch and kill him. I am so upset. I told her again she needs to stop feeding him but she refuses. Are there any rehabbers in my area who could release him away from people for me? Or does anyone have any ideas? He loves everyone and is not aggressive at all although small children annoy him. I don't know what to do but having someone kill him is not an option. He is currently back in his cage in my hard where he is safe. Ideas anyone?
