Anyone dealt with this? Jill still battling ear infection on her side with her bad leg. Vet told me it was diplococci and very hard to treat on any animal as it is very resistant to treatment. We've tried 2 ear meds and it's still bad. We go back to the vet tomorrow. Any suggestions??

Has the vet said whether it is the gram negative or gram positive variety?

No. Should I ask that tomorrow?

Back at the end of February he had me wash her ears with TrizEDTA. Then apply Malotic (Gentizol) (gentamicin sulfate, betamethasone, and clotrimaxole) daily. It got worse and she started losing hair behind her ear. We've done 2 rounds of Osurnia Otic gel for dogs (florfenicol-terbinafine-betamethasone acetate) (every two weeks) it seems to have gotten a little better. But she still has green gooey gunk coming out her ear. The hair is coming back. He will see her and try his best but he's not a squirrel expert so he takes suggestions.

I sure would.
There are both varieties...gram negative is most commonly known to us as STD's (gonorrhea would be an example (there are many)) and then the gram positive is usually of the staphylococcus variety. Each would require a med specific to the bacteria in her.
A quick gram stain and the vet should be able to identify the type of bacteria quickly.

If I had to take a guess, I'd say you're dealing with a gram negative bacteria - they are usually not as receptive to antibiotics and take a longer time to respond.

Good luck today MB & Jill!! I thought for sure others would have commented so you'd be armed with questions and ideas for the vet. I'm sorry that didn't happen, it's really kind of disappointing especially for a sweetie with a history like Jill.
I'm curious for the outcome, so please be sure to update. If you'd prefer to just email (I'm not usually on TSB) it's okay with me.
Thinking of you both!! :Love_Icon:Love_Icon

MollyBear, I just found this excellent chart:
https://medschool.creighton.edu/fileadmin/user/medicine/MMI/Files/Bacteria_Table.pdf
As you can see right at the top, when diplococci is involved the recommended ABX are cillins -- especially CLINDAMYCIN, which is safe for squirrels. We know that clindamycin is also excellent for any abcess, illness or infection in rodents above the neck, so I would strongly recommend it.
