I went to the park with my family last night and my husband found a squirrel that can't use its back legs. Didn't want to leave it to die, so he wrapped his shirt around it and we brought it home. Hoping someone here can help me find a rehabilitation close to us who can help this poor little boy/girl. Hope we didn't make the wrong decision in bringing it with us. We live in boone county, Kentucky. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thank you for taking this little one in and trying to find a Rehabber. Someone should be on soon to help with the location of a nearby Rehabber. In the meantime are you offering any liquids or food? He/she might eat romaine lettuce, broccoli or other veggies you have on hand. Nuts are not a great choice, but possibly the only thing it might eat short term. Offer some water in a shallow bowl, too.

Thanks for the reassurance! Yes, I've put a shallow dish of water and some hampster/gerbil food, from my daughters pet, in the portable cage with it.

We have very few members from Kentucky, however I have a list from the state of
licensed rehabbers that could possibly help.
http://wildlife.rescueshelter.com/Kentucky

I will go through our membership again, to see if we have a member who is close
to you. Can you tell me what city you live in.

Remember that most wildlife places will most likely euthanize as they are not
staffed to care for a squirrel that may require a lot of time.

Can you post a picture of her? This may be from a simple fall, where Prednisone
could help her. Without knowing the cause, we are only left to guess what happened
to this poor soul. :(

Edit: I see that you put your location, sorry. :)

Thank you for trying. I live in Florence, KY. That's what I figured a wildlife place would do, so I'm trying to avoid that route. Give me a sec while I figure out how to send a pic on here. Just realized, I can't send a pic, sorry. This profile is actually my aunts that lives in southern kentucky. She let me use hers so I could try to find some help for the squirrel.

Send pictures to my email if you want. I will pm you my address.

I notified 4 members who are licensed rehabbers.
Hopefully someone will come on soon.

Here's the little patient. :Love_Icon

She looks in great shape. I wonder if this was "just" a fall,
or grazed by a car. Are there cars nearby where she was found?
Did you notice any blood around her/him?
If you can, check for nipples, as this could be a nursing mom, if
this is a female.
Do you have any prednisone?
We could guesstimate the weight and dose with that to see
if inflammation is hindering her ability to walk, it may help
her/him. :dono
Has the tail ever gotten "bushy", or does it stay flat?
I see in the photo that the right leg "lags" behind, can she move it?

Sorry, couple more questions.
Are these metal bars on the cage, or plastic?
Also, if you can put in some more fleece, that
would be better for her to hide under.
Also is the cage partially covered, and is she
inside or outside?

She is outside in a portable dog cage that has some metal bars and some plastic. I noticed when I try doing anything she does try nibbling through the plastic ones. She is not in direct sunlight, she is under our carport with plenty of shade and a nice little breeze. The pics were taken out in the sunlight so I could get better ones. I do not have prednisone and no idea of anyone that has any. I will have my husband pick up children's ibuprofen on his way home from work. Just really wish there was someone who could take it that knows more and can do more for it. But until then, I'm open to any advice you have!

Hello,

I'm in Lagrange, Kentucky. Be happy to meet somewhere in between! I'm in Professional Development right now (just logging in out of boredom!) but message me! I should be done around 6:00 pm. Just realized the rehabber page has me listed in Henry county. If you tried calling that's an old number!

Been talking on PM's. Mommasbaby is deciding what she wants to do with the little guy! Gave her some info on another rehabber as well. Hope it's just the fall and nothing more permanent!

Well, I left messages, gave my phone number and haven't heard anything back from Mommasbaby since yesterday. Hope the little guy does well! Squirrels can certainly bounce back quickly sometimes!:dono:dono

Sorry I missed this. There is only ONE Rehabber in Northern KY and she does only birds. I was raised in Kenton County. And know right where Boone is.

Boone Kenton and Cambell are vacant. I think grant and Owen county is too. That whole region has no coverage. :(

Sorry to see her non responsive. But it is possible that he or she died or that a Rehabber in Ohio took it ( which would be illegal .. But ) I get coon calls for KY coons all the time.

She also would have had to driven probably to Louisville or Lexington KY. A couple hours to get to a Rehabber :(

If myself or one of my kids happen to move back over the river from Cinci to KY .. There will be a Rehabber for small mammals.

I'm in Campbell county and after working with the two that I have I am willing to get certified. Can you point me in the right direction?

I would to here. http://fw.ky.gov/Wildlife/Pages/Wildlife-Rehabilitation.aspx

Your regs don't look too much different from Ohios. Except our permits are free. and come in confusing levels. And Ky is One permit and go ( cept birds.. you would still need a fed for birds.)

I took the IWRC class when it came to Cinci. It was good. I think Karen Baliey teaches it in Lexington once or twice a year. Not too hard but alot of information. I scored a 98 on the test ( open book :P ) I skipped a question on a yak or big horn sheep LOL UGH..

If I can be of any help to you I am in NKY once a week and would be happy to help you in any way.

Thank you so much for the offer, you are very kind. I haven't taken a test in a looooong time! I'll have to dig my thinking cap out of the attic.

I'll check it out and if I have to, I'll drive down to Lexington for a Karen Bailey lecture. And may be, if I'm lucky, I can get a look at her place and ALL OF HER BABIES!! :burns
