What is the strength of the SMZ-TMP?
Is there anyway you can get an accurate weight?
We dose according to strength in mg of the drug, and weight.
Can you post a photo of your squirrel.
What city are you in, in NY?
Most important, what is his diet like?

The strength of the SMZ - TMP is 160/800 MG tablets

We are in Buffalo, New York

I feed him garden food, nuts, and bird food. When he is outside, I usually give him nature food ( twigs, apple bark )

Over the weekend, I had him about for about two hours, in the shade, which I thought he was getting a slight breeze. My husband said it was too hot and said to bring him in. Ever since then, he has been very lethargic and tired.

I wasn't able to get a weight. I feed him more generously than he would be fed if he was in the wild, so he is a little overweight than the average wild squirrel. Please reply back soon, like I said I had him since he was little.

PLEASE read this link below.

A squirrel can develop heatstroke in as little as 10 minutes, even in the shade!

http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?17785-WARNING!-Squirrels-Can-Overheat-in-Summer!

The diet is off, and nuts need to be limited to a treat of 1-2 per DAY.
Bird seed is just as bad.
I will send dosing instructions through a pm.
Do you have a 1 mL syringe?

Yes, I do have a syringe.

Do you think its a UTI or a heatstroke? What should I be looking for for either one? Thank you

My syringe starts at 5ml, is there any way I can do .33 without actually measuring, would I have to run to the store and buy one? Can I even buy one?

Ask a pharmacist at a drug store.
Tell them you just need one to feed
a baby bird. :) OR to dose an abandoned kitten.

Thank you so much, ill be posting here every few days to tell you if he's improving.

Just to see if this is or isn't the problem, do you know when I should be seeing results of him acting normal?

If you are giving the SMZ for a UTI it's slow acting, so I would suspect probably 3-4 days.
regardless of the problem HYDRATION is key.
Try giving him watermelon, or any sort of juicy fruit, along with extra water.
You can put a touch of honey in the water, which may entice him to drink more.
Remember on this drug, hydration is very important. :hug

Rethinking this. If the problem is from the heat,
start giving pedialyte to replace the electrolytes. I would get the plain and a flavored
one as he may like that better. I think they have apple, and raspberry flavors along with
others.
Give this for no longer than 24 hours, (some say 48) then you can switch to
honey water, if he'll take extra hydration.

I gave Chester his second dose of medicine. We also took your advice and bought polypeptide. I have to tell you its hard to put anything mixed in with his water. He senses it and does not drink, so as of now we are giving it to him with the syringe. He is drinking water on his own and he's eating apples. Seems to be what he likes. We will see how he is in the morning and keep you posted. Thanks for all your help.:thumbsup

Thank you for the update on Chester.
Remember Pedialyte is for only 24 hours.
You can give water with a touch of honey if he
takes that more willingly.
After he's recouped go back to plain water. :thumbsup
