I found this product on Amazon; somebody else in the review said they'd used with success on their GS dog who had hip dysplasia and dragged his feet. My Shelly is paralyzed in her back legs and drags her knees. We had to contain her to her 2story ferret nation cage for 2 months so they could heal.

Letting her out for just 2 or 3 hours a night, and they are getting raw again. :sadness but this liquid-type "bandage" might be something we could apply to her knees to protect them?

Otherwise we're thinking of constructing a sort of wide "skirt" to put on her so her knees don't get burned. We tried cutting out foam circles with holes in the middle to velcro around her leg/knee, but it doesn't stay on, just slowly gets dragged off her leg.

I've used liquid bandage on myself before and it works great. I remembered it burned tho, so depending on how bad her friction burns are, it could sting.

I know exactly how frustrating it is to treat friction burns on these paralyzed guys. My Scooter gets drag sores. I've made "drag bags" for him with a yolk and a bag. He ate them. I wrapped his legs except sometimes the sores were places I couldn't wrap securely. I tried keeping him confined in a padded cage. He was tolerant but can't keep a squirrel in a small cage forever. I tried the liquid bandage but he chewed it off and that made the sore MUCH worse. If you find a cure for friction burn I sure hope you post. In the mean time, I give him lots of skritches and lovins and he has the run of the squirrel room. All the cages are draped with fleece. He still gets sores but every night I spray his legs with Vetericyn and then apply Dermagel. Keeps things under control but I don't have a solution. Wish I did.

Sara, I did read in the product comments that stinging seemed to be the case with this specific liquid bandage. maybe some people have figured out a way to minimize the stinging, I'll look at more of the comments.

I did read on another site dealing with paralyzed pets that some people were successful making little "pants" using infant tights. they cut the tummy seam down the middle and slid the animals legs into the tights. then they secured by tying the tummy part around the belly.

I'm just not able to handle Shelly this much, but this sounded like it would work once the legs were completely healed, to prevent more burns?

Ordered the liquid bandage last night, will arrive tomorrow. I'll make sure to update everyone on how successful or not this will be.

CL, I know exactly what you mean about keeping them in a small cage forever. just not feasible. and Shelly is fine with just a few hours in the afternoon. she even goes back to "bed" herself now at night without my trying to herd her back into the cage. She is such a good girl, I have to figure out a way to let her get some free time out of the cage without her getting these hideous drag burns.
