Hi everyone.

One of our babies which is ready to start soft release has an issue that has arisen.
Her ears have started rolling down from the tips towards the head. They are crispy feelling and when we looked behind them we found very raw skin.
Any ideas on what is going on here? Mites? Shes been with us for months though so I don't know where the mites would have come from.

Please see pics and if anyone has an idea let us know.

thanks!

I don't know either but something is itching those ears. I would put a drop of Revolution on her neck. Watch that wound. It might get infected. I would hold off on antibiotics at this point. If she stops scratching it it will probably get better.

Hi Patti!

Thanks for the input.

Revolution has been given.
The ears are recovering it seems but really slowly.

It will take a week or so for the ears to get better. You can keep putting the coconut oil on them, just to keep them moist. Mites just happen. They will be fine :hug

Sarcoptic mange starts with the ears just like that; Revolution, dosed properly, should take care of it.
Mange arises when a squirrel's body is stressed for some reason. Try to figure out what is stressing him. It's like shingles in humans: it's there in their bodies all the time, but only expresses itself under stress.

Hmmm..... mange may be a consideration.
I just noticed a red spot that just developed behind her right ear now as well where the hair has fallen out with the same crusty and bloody skin.
That is a new development that I'm not happy about.

Can't imagine what may be stressing her though.
Her and partner seem to get along just fine so I don't think it's that.

She has had the revolution and now it is just wait. Scarcoptic Mange is a mite issue but stress can cause the antibodies to fall out of check and the mites start to multiply. Payton has been treated and will have another dose in two weeks. If something further changes we can go from there. The coconut oil will keep the scabbing soft so the ear doesn't heal curled, which I have seen. The curled ear doesn't affect anything, it just looks a little funny.
