Hey there Squirrel Board folks! We've had Penelope for most of her life now, and the past few weeks she's been in an outdoor cage being prepared for release. We had planned to release her on Tuesday, but when I was feeding her yesterday I noticed that what appears to be one of her nipples is swollen to about the size of half a grape, and is extremely red. Has anyone heard of this before? How can I help her? She's fed a diet of fruits and vegetables, along with Henry's blocks and very occasionally a serving of nuts or seeds. I'm going to try to get a picture of her problem in a bit. Thank you!

This is a picture of the poor thing. Don't worry, the red beneath her isn't blood, it's from a piece of frozen strawberry.

That looks like either an abscess or a bot fly warble. The bot fly season has already started in FL so this might be what you're seeing. I would give that a few days and see how it develops. You should know for sure in a few days. I would hold off on release in case it's an abscess.

I was thinking the same thing Patti, as it almost appears to have an opening. :dono
Just to be on the safe side, can you get ONE Clavamox (animal antibiotic) or one Augmentin (human antibioric),
in case this turns out to be an abscess?

I will get the antibiotics now just in case! We're going to bring her back inside for a couple of days just so I can keep a closer eye on her. Should I try to apply anything topically? You guys are awesome, thanks so much!

A topical wouldn't do much at this point. Watch it for a few days and see if a small pore opens up. If it's a bot fly you will see the pore bubble a little. It's totally gross. :yuck
