Head tilt, lame back leg

I have a juvenilesquirrel in my tub.
Truth is I put her there. Someone came to me to rescue her. I tried to return to mom but when I saw her injuries were to bad for that my tub became her home (She goes a box when I take a shower). She rolls like an alligator.

After reading this board and talking to a few people she is eating a blend of dog food, goat milk, Tums, pwd greens, peanut butter and tahini through an oral syringe. I also got a rodent water bottle for her. Henry's squirrel blocks are on their way. She is eating well (5-10cc every few hours) is hydrated (finally) and active though rolling rather than walking.

So now my questions:

1) How do you get mineral oil those tiny ears?
2) How long does it take to get rid of mites?
3) How can I rehab that back leg?
4) Is there anyone near Colorado Springs that can help?

First...can you tell us how much she weighs....do you have an idea of her age...the weight and a pic would help us determine age for you:great age is very important because she will need to be on formula...well she "needs" to be on formula now...just for how long and how much her age and size will determine:grin3 you can use goats milk formula...but depending on age, Esbilac with probiotics and Fox Valley 20/50 would be a better choice:great

I would stop the dog food and the tahini...and peanut butter. Blocks and formula is all you need right now...and if she's older...some vegetables :grin3 the Henry's blocks are phenomenal...they take the guess work out of whether they are getting the nutrition they need :great

To answer your questions...I wouldn't put mineral oil in her ears....if she has mites in her ears...I would get medicated drops...from pet store, something for kittens or rodents....also ivermectin can be used...but someone will have to assist on dosing and if she's old enough :dono

Mites will leave quickly once under treatment...usually with a follow up treatment...I've never dealt with mites but lots of folks here have :great

With the leg it would really be good if we could get a video of how she's moving...or at very least a pic of the leg :great

We do have members in Colorado:dono I'm not sure how close to you tho....an administrator could put your location in the title and that will help to alert people in your area:great

Oh and that reminds me....depending on age she probably needs to be on heat....you can put her in a plastic bin....drill or cut some holes in the top and the top part of the sides:great and fill with fleece, old tshirts or flannel shirts ....any soft material that doesn't have loops like you see in towels:great put bin half way on a heating pad (that doesn't cut off) or make a rice buddy...sock filled with rice....microwave for 20 sec intervals...kneading each time to spread heat and make sure it's not too hot:great the baby will love it and snuggle up to it for comfort ...I always use one even with the heating pad, just for comfort :Love_Icon

Oh bless her heart...she's a Foxer....so she could be younger....they are much larger than greys ...I would definitely put her on heat....and soft blankies, tshirts...as I stated above. She does look like there's something going on :shakehead and yes the powdered Esbilac with probiotics:great

You know you can wrap her up in a blanket with a rice buddy and hold her....they do thrive with contact....at her age she'd be in a pile with siblings:grouphug

Thank you for caring for her....I would keep hydrating her.....maybe some molasses in her mouth to perk her up....I'm worried about her....and yes...people make me sooo mad...they could care less about wildlife...especially the people who are suppose to protect them :madd

You can bath the baby in warm water and a little blue Dawn dish washing soap. This usually takes care of the mites.
It would be safer than the ivermectin in this case. Ivermectin is used for that purpose but with a head tilt, the baby might have neurological problems. Ivermectin might cause problems if the baby has neurological issues.

I just pm'd an Admin....maybe they could find someone in your area to help...I don't know how long she's been like this...or what caused it...did the people who brought her to you know....cuz that would help also:great she may need to be on some prednisone....if the initial injury wasn't that long ago...you may want to pick up some infant ibuprofen for pain..we can dose it for you...I'm praying for you both :please hopefully help is on the way :Love_Icon

They didn't have the right formula
So I got the molasses,the formula they had plus yogurt and heavy whipping cream.

When I got home I put some molasses in the end of the water bottle, in the water bottle and in the formula I made

Two part goat milk
One part yogurt
One part heavy whipping cream

I added a touch of molasses since I got pain yogurt instead of vanilla

I'm found a nipple for the end of the oral feeding syringe.

Sparky (yes I decided a name was better than the gender pronoun) was quite interested in all of it

I will go back putt tomorrow and look again for the right formula.

Shall I offer Sparky formula and water frequently until her spirits are up?

The goat's milk formula is good for now:great I've used it before....I would try and offer water in between feedings....you said he's getting 5 to 10 ccs per feeding...that would be good if he weighs about 100 to 150 grams....which isn't very big :dono it would be good if you could get a weight ....he should be getting 5 to 7 % is body weight...so if he weighed 100 g he would need 5 to 7 ccs/mLs per feeding. Also...I don't know if you know the correct way to feed....which might be harder with her condition....the syringe needs to be under her as she's drinking...here's a pic for example...you may be doing this already...but I needed to learn :hidechair

I'm pretty sure Sparky fell from a tree onto concrete about 40' below.
I saw the location and it's under a pedestrian bridge over a road where there are young elms about 20' tall at the level of the pedestrian bridge.

I would start asking friends and family if they have a pill....that's all you need is one....we can give you all the dosing info...or dexamethasone...I don't know if you have a vet that will sell it to you....most vets will just put him down (as in euthanize) :shakehead anyone you know with back trouble :dono

The water bottle is ok in the cage....if he'll drink from it...but I didn't think he'd be able to....because of his neuro issues...formula should be through the syringe and warm...check it just like a baby...I usually keep a small container of formula in a cup of hot water and pull from that...checking to make sure it's not too hot or too cool:great
Also...they do not clean up very well...so us mommas have to...I use a paper towel and dip it in the water I was keeping the formula warm in :great :grin3 babies :klunk

Anyway she is much spunkier today.
I found some prednisone and got the right formula.

I've left a messege for my friend with the prednisone
I'm waiting for a call back so I can go pick it up.

I heard again that "the"person around here is named Aurora. I've called her once and haven't heard back. I will call again.

I will also try Ellicott wildlife rescue again as I heard from "The Bird Store" Ellicott's phone menu has other options.

Edit: oh and please be careful with the wildlife centers ....ask lots of questions....tell them you are going to follow up on her....because they have been known to play nice to the public....but once they have a compromised squirrel they usually euthanize or worse...feed it to one of their predator species :sadness

Spanky has contacted me a couple of times but I finally found the information.

I so feel for Sparky.

I found a vet that would look at her for free but as all the rescue orgs are FULL I know they would just put her down

I go back and forth on what's best for her but I'm glad to be here for her as long as she sticks around

Sparky got her first dose of prednisone just now and I will be giving her more formula soon. I sure see where squirrelly comes from. Now that she is feeling better she is quite squirrelly. It's wonderful to watch her improve.

Sparky seems to be eating better. And now since I found the feeding scheduled I won't feed her so often.

Sparky passed away today

She just refused to eat enough
She was a though little bugger
I buried her under a tree near a stream
The skies opens up and wept for her today

She taught me so much

I will alway think fondly of her with abundant joy and melancholy

Next time I will be better prepared because of what I learned here and what she taught me
