View Full Version : In need of some suggestions and help
Hello everyone! Two squirrels came running over to me (late evening) very scared and tired.. I wasn't sure on what to do so I put them in a box with a blanket for the night (and put them in my little bike garage that was safe from predators). I'm calling mnr today to see if there are any Smm rescuers near me. Help! I'm not sure how old they are (they have fur and bushy tails) so I'm not really sure what steps I should take to feed or help rehydrate them

Most likely they have lost their mother.
When little squirrels approach people this is typically
a cry for help.
Make sure the container they are in is "squirrel proof"
meaning that they can't chew their way out.
Offer a shallow dish of water, and some small
pieces of nuts, and apples without the skin.
Make sure they have enough blankets (or something similar
they can't catch their nails in) for warmth.
Can you post a picture so we can estimate the age.
I will send you a pm with some Canadian members that
you can reach out to.
If nobody can be found, are you willing to raise them yourself?
Thank you for helping these little lost souls. :hug

Nancy is right on the case :great. If they have bushy tails already, they might just need a week or two of rest and good food before they can be out on their own. But also make sure they can't escape what you've got them in --- squirrels at that age are already little Houdini's!

Hi and welcome.
I see that you are in Thunder Bay, ON.
We are in Mtl, QC, which is many hours away from you.
There is a rehabber in Guelph, ON, but I do not know anything about availability or anything at all. Usually, you would have to bring them to her. Although it is quite a drive for you, too.
Imho, if the babies are as old as you describe and if no other help found, it might be the best for you to kind of finish raising them. As Island Rehabber said, if they are as old as you describe them, they may need a couple of weeks of care and then could be released.
As for ON authorities, as far as I remember the way it was in Toronto, for example, baby sqs would usually get euthanized because there was not enough resources to care for them.
Also, if they look as old as you describe, whatever authorities may end up taking them will decide to release them as is - for the most part, wildlife centers tend to release babies too early anyway. So, in your case they may decide to release the babies and let the nature take its course. They may not tell you that upfront, but that's what they usually do (aside from euthanizing younger babies who need more care).
If you do decide to keep them for a few weeks, there is plenty of help and information here, so you won't be on your own.
YOu can also try this: https://www.facebook.com/Ecureuil-Land-137686376323278/?fref=ts --- perhaps, there are people from Thundery Bay or nearby areas who could help you.

Could you post pics of them?
It will help to determine their age more accurately, and depending on their age, to determine the best way to care for them.
