Hi there....

I raised three baby greys since they were 2 weeks old. I released them last week ( tomorrow will be 7 days ) at age 15 weeks.
They were weaned off Fox Valley by 11 weeks ( they weaned themselves ).

Before release I fed them a diet of Henry's blocks and monkey biscuits for breakfast, then a variety of vegetables ( lots of kale ) and a couple of fruits. After they ate a majority of this, I'd give them a few nuts and seeds.

Anyway, one of the babies came home tonight, in the dark and in a rainstorm, to get back in the cage. It was dark and I had the back porch light on. I didn't think much of it because they'd been doing that all week, but was surprised he came back in the dark in the rain. He looked normal at first, immediately drank some water and munched on some veggies and a couple nuts in the cage.

Then I noticed he was dragging his butt. So I googled squirrel dragging butt.....and it might be more that he's not wanting to use his back legs. And then MBD kept coming up.

This particular baby weaned himself off FV by 10 weeks. I tried force feeding him at first because I was afraid of MBD, but it was making him mad. And now, 7 days after release, he's dragging his butt.

I put a Tums in his water dish and broke one up hoping he'd nibble on it. It's impossible to force feed him a calcium paste. He simply won't allow it. I took every bit of food out of the cage except blocks and monkey biscuits so that's all he has to eat.

I'm not even sure it's MBD. Maybe he hurt himself? He seems totally fine except for dragging his butt ( or not wanting to use his back legs ).

Any thoughts on this?

I would guess it is an injury. Are others coming home or could he be closed in the cage? I would probably bring him back in to a very low cage if that is an option. You don't want him to injure himself further out there.

I went ahead and closed the cage since it was after 10pm and the other two never came back ( it's raining ). I want to make sure he stays in there until I can check him in the morning. He's not wanting to go into the squirrel house in the cage where he would have to climb in and go down a hole to the bottom of the house. He made a nest with newspaper and a torn up tee shirt in a fake tree log in the cage. This was new....he never wanted to sleep somewhere else til now. I'm wondering of it hurts him to climb into the bottom of the squirrel house.

How wild is he? Do you have an indoor cage he could go into?

Keeping him from climbing is important until you can figure out what is wrong. You don't want him to do more damage. Thank-you for being such a good squammy!:grouphug
