Hello, I used to have a Northern Flyer and I could not ever get her to eat any type of meat, but she LOVED freeze dried meal worms. I no longer have a Northern, but I do now have a Southern Flying Squirrel. I have read that Southerns are a bit more carnivorous than Northerns. Boy oh boy am I finding this to be true! Kiva, my baby girl, absolutely LOVES meat! ALL MEAT! LoL! If she smells meat cooking or while I am eating it, she will not stop going crazy until I give her some. She will not eat the freeze dried meal worms. My question is, Is there any type of meat that I CANNOT feed to her? I don't do seafood, so will not ever get any of that. I only do tuna once in a blue moon, so I don't know if she is allowed to have that or not? But she loves beef, pork and chicken. All forms of those meats. Are they safe to feed her?

:thinking Interesting. I've never fed beef or pork to my flyers but they will eat chicken. I've never fed freeze dried worms but they do eat fresh mealworms. They LOVE Mealworms. As far as the safety of other meats, I really don't know. :dono

I personally would probably have a little bit of trouble with feeding her live worms or bugs of any kind :yuck LoL

I'll have to work on getting pics of her eating it. I forgot, she stole a little piece of my beef jerky the other day too!:gigg

Interesting...I didn't think squirrels were omnivores.

I mistyped in my earlier post. My flyers LOVE WaxWorms. They will eat mealworms but prefer WaxWorms. It is pretty gross watching them eat them. :yuck

Other tree squirrels are mostly herbivores but they will eat bird eggs, worms and have been photographed eating other small animals. I certainly don't think meat is a large part of grey/fox squirrels diet though.

I'm a vegetarian myself so I don't have meat in the house other than what the flyers eat. I'll have to get my mom to save some ribs for the boys. I'd love to see that. :grin2

If you do let them try some ribs or something, you should let us know if they liked it or not. :grin2 I didn't even try to see if she liked any of these meats. She told me that she liked them. If she smells it, she comes running! LoL

My flyers LOVE meat as well. I have one that has to have a bite of sausage. My chicken crazy flyer passed away recently but at age 11. She was a connoisseur of nuggets with a love of Chik-Fil-A and a disdain for Burger King's. I never tried seafood. I just remember learning early on in my research that flyers and other squirrels would become scavengers during hard times and fed on dead animals/eggs/baby birds etc so I figured why not try meat and eggs. I never had any luck actually getting flyers to eat eggs though. Greys seems to like them though.

Here she is taking a bite of my daughter's hotdog tonight! Yes, the hotdog, not the bread! LoL Don't mind my double chin while I am trying to look at her haha! And I don't know why the pic is sideways.

at least for my southern flyer Emma, food always tastes better when she steals it. :grin2
