Petey had diarrhea for the past week, went to the vet today, got Albon 250mg/5ml though the vet didn't see any eggs he gave this to me anyway just in case. He weighs 288 grams.
Pepto bismol and Imodium for kids did not help, I gave him rice checks, I have been adding water to sweet potato baby food to coax him to drink water twice a day, he gets milk 3 times a day, Henry's blocks and vegetables.
If not parasites, what could it be. I was feeding him 20 cc's of milk, went up to 21 cc's today. Am I over feeding him? His poops has changed consistency and color over the past week, weird. Right now, his poops are brown soft, very soft and mushy, not watery.

Overfeeding and/ or improper formula is often the cause for soft stool/ diarrhea.
I found with my last batch going to 7% feedings caused soft stools, I dropped back to 5% until they became "normal" again.
I increased to 6%, things were fine. When I increased to 7% (over time) their stools got soft again. I held them at 6% and had
no problems. At 288gms 20.1 cc's is your 7%, 21cc's is over that. Why not try dropping back on the formula percentages to see
where things stand before going to a med that very possibly is not needed.

Hi Nancy, I am feeding him Esbilac with probiotics.
This diarrhea started when I mixed a little fox valley with the Esbilac, so I immediately quit and stayed with the Esbilac.

Thank you, I can hold off on the medicine and cut back to see if that improves things. This baby likes his milk and would take more if I let him, that's why I took it the 7% or a hair over rounding it up to the next cc. I'll cut it back to 6% and see if that helps and give him 3 days to see improvements before I start the meds. Thank you again.

I have been giving albon to Petey since Friday night, he has had 3 doses now, due for one tonight however, his poop has changed from starting to look normal to watery to mushy. Now looks bloody. I don't know what is going on with this little guy, I have cut his milk (Esbilac) feedings down as well. Is Albon causing inflammation in his system?
What should I do? Do I stop with the Albon or keep giving it to him?
Also, are walnut tree branches safe for squirrels. I had my husband bring in a large branch that I set up in a Christmas tree stand for my squirrels to climb on just today. I want to be sure that walnut trees are safe.

Is there any way you could get a fecal done? Perhaps it is a different parasite than coccidia. I believe walnut branches are okay, but no experience with them.

I had him at the vet Last Thursday, he checked his poop at that time, no blood though. Any idea what could be causing the blood in his stool? Would Albon be doing this? The vet didn't find any "eggs" in his stool.

Here are two pictures I just took, I had him out to give him the medicine. The lighting was different for both pictures, the fleece is light beige. The yellow looking fleece was due to the lighting so the color is not accurate with that one. But I am posting both pictures to give an idea of what his poops look like right now.

It's not unusual to encounter diarrhea when changing up formulas, digestive upset was likely started and due to the added fat from the FV.
Some babies take to the blend well, some don't. It's the same with others that add whipping cream to formula, some handle it well, with some
their systems don't tolerate it. My personal opinion is that's what should have been concentrated on and not assuming a medical condition
requiring meds.
Obviously I'm not a big fan on using medications unless absolutely necessary to target a condition they are designed for.
I personally don't see where such a condition existed here for the use of Albon. :dono

On May 3rd I mixed a little Fv with Esbilac. I had a small amount of powder formula in another can that was half and half fv and esbilac, I mixed that to the little bit of esbilac I had in the can I was using which had more in it than the 1/2 and 1/2 mix. He didn't poop for the next 3 feedings, the next morning I started him on a new can of esbilac without the fv because of the constipation. At his 2nd feeding, he pooped a lot and on his 3rd feeding his poops got soft. On 5/5 his poops were soft all day. On 5/6 they were soft all day until that night they went loose. On Saturday, May 7, he was full diarrhea. I don't imagine it being from the little bit of fv that was mixed in with esbilac and fed to him for one day May 3rd, could it? He has only had esbilac since.
Since he has had diarrhea, to get him to drink extra fluids I have mix sweet potato baby food with water because he fights me when I try to get him to drink water. I only use purified bottled water. He wont drink from the water bottle. He turned 9 weeks old last Saturday. I am feeding him 3 milk meals a day since I cut the amount down. Just tonight I diluted his milk with water by half to get more water in him since he doesn't need this much milk. I am planning on doing this tomorrow but feeding him every 4 hours so he gets enough water during the day instead of giving him sweet potato "juice". Unless someone doesn't think that is a good idea, typically, they don't need more than 2 milk feedings a day at this age, right?

Understand wanting to get water in him just keep in mind diluting the formula also dilutes the nutrients.
You are correct that you don't need to feed formula for his age more then 2x per day assuming that they
are on solid foods also as yours has been.
Do you think he is dehydrated or are you just taking the diarrhea in consideration?
Since he won't drink from a water bottle, have you tried a small bowl?
Whenever I have babies with diarrhea I go right to a (partial) Brat formula mix. If they are eating solids and taking formula
I cut out the veggies, hold their formula to no more then 6%, and just give block and the formula mix up until their bowels
are where they need to be. I usually go a few days past that and then start weaning them off the mix starting by eliminating
the banana first then the rice cereal. Then as long as the poo's are staying good I slowly start introducing veggies back into
the diet. If they back slide and I've only had two so far that has done that, I put them back on the brat mix. I have not had
to use medications with the exception of once to get diarrhea under control and I have had my share of babies with diarrhea.
The one exception where I felt convinced to use a med it didn't do squat for the diarrhea, resorting to the brat mix did.
Usually on the mix one can began to see improvement by 3 days time although (depending on squirrel) it may take several days
longer to get to the nice firm formed poo's we want to see. For me the advantage on using the mix vs. medications is it's not
messing with their gut flora the way most ab meds do. If you think you'd want to give this a try, below is the recipe...
(Partial) Brat Formula Mix
3 tablespoons (already) mixed formula 2-1
1/2 tsp baby rice powered cereal
1/2 tsp banana baby food.

With diluting his milk, I am going to feed him 4-5 times a day so that he gets the required amount of nutrients he needs. He is eating his blocks and veggies. I started diluting his milk last night late after I posted here. There was no more bloody stool since then and it's thickening up again however, I am holding my breath since it changes constantly. I read last night in severe cases of coccidian, it can cause bloody stool.
He isn't dehydrated but I am pushing extra fluids to prevent it because of the diarrhea. For the Brat formula mix, formula 2-1, do you mean 2 parts already made formula to 1 part water?
Thank you for helping me out. I got really worried last night. He is active and eating but I know how quickly these babies can go down hill.

Correct. :great You would add the B&R mix to that.
Hope you continue to see improvement.

Thank you Stepnstone. Petey is doing good since I started diluting his milk. I am gradually going to full strength over several days, taking it slow making sure his stools stay normal. I will do the water to powdered esbilac 3-1 ratio for another day then go full strength after that. I haven't had to do the Brat diet since his stools changed over night and remained normal. He is 10 weeks old today.
