Hey guys. I was given a cottontail this morning (eyes closed, just barely getting fur) that was picked up by a dog. There is a laceration that is pretty deep on its face. Is there anything you can do for a bun that small to prevent infection?

and one more question. Do you guys break up the feedings over 24 hours or do you just feed during daylight hours?

Baytril is very well tolerated by bunns and is what I would and do use.
Bunns eat twice a day...dusk and dawn.
In the morning, potty the bunn, weigh the bunn and record the weight. Feed 10% of that weight per feeding for the day. Repeat the next day.

One more question, are you using fox valley alone or are you mixing with goat milk? Most of the bunny rehabbers I know are using goat milk right now and are having some success. I'm also having difficulty getting her to eat. Her belly is distended so there might be some internal injuries. She's probably eaten about a cc today and only swallows a few times before becoming nonresponsive (and I've tried reheating the formula but no dice). She also is not pottying when stimulated though that might be related to the fact mom already did it today as she was found in a dog's mouth around 9:30am this morning.

Oh my! thank you for helping this little one. :hug. I know very little about bunnies, but someone should be on here soon to help you. You could also send a private message to MM and ask a specific question or for help. Up at the top of your screen it has an icon for notifications. That is what you click on for a private message. I hope this little bun-bun does ok.

Distended belly = get as much Gas-X into her as possible as fast as possible. If you have to and have the ability tube it. Providing you don't exceed 10% of her weight there is no such thing as too much Gas X when it comes to a bunn. If this works and her belly goes down she gets NOTHING except water with probiotics for 24 hours. Just keep pushing the GasX and the probiotic water. Hourly if possible.
DO NOT provide heat like we do for squirrels. If you feel she's cool, place a heating pad on low on the outside wall of her bin....very slight radiant heat. A bunns gut is based on bacteria, heat promotes bacteria growth, too much bacteria will cause bloat and "wet tail" (screaming poops) and then usually death.
No, I do not use any FV products with my bunns. I use domestic/european bunny formula.
1/2 cup goats milk
1/2 cup KMR
1 - 1 1/2 TBSP Colostrum
3cc Heavy Cream
1 teaspoon Probiotic
3 big red scoops of KMR powder and 6 big red scoops of hot water equals 1/2 cup...same goes for goats milk
Mix all of this stuff together and allow it to rest for at least 4 hours (6-8 is better).
Bunns like their formula HOT. This formula tastes really good so they are very willing to take it. Make it as written and try it. If they aren't interested, try adding 1/2 a cc more of cream and try again.
A trick to get them to drink it...take a DROP and put it on the point on her lips, just beneath her nose. She'll lick it off, then do it again a few more times, then do t again but don't move the syringe. When she goes to lick she'll lick the syringe and then giver her a drop. At that point hang on to that plunger tight...bunnies can suck like you would not believe...it's called super sucking.

EDIT: Just to clarify....do NOT give the bunny 10% of the BW of gasX or water every hour. Only do every hour if yoh have to go bit by bit cause she won't take enough of it.

I can't get gas x in her. I can only find chewable tablets and softgels and neither mix into liquid very well.

You can use any infant simethicone.

I can't get that until tomorrow now. I already just barely made it to the store before closing. I didn't see any liquid form either.

Sorry I should have been more specific and not taken it as common knowledge. Infant gasx/simethicone is liquid and any brand works. My CVS's are open 24 hours and Walgreens too and even grocery stores carry the liquid around here.

I managed to find a store that was still open and had infant. The store I went to before didn't have anything for children.

The bunny is currently eating 10% of her body weight twice a day. She is gaining about 2-3 grams a day. Does this sound like adequate weight gain?

The long-term licensed wildlife rehabber I subcontract under says every mammal having contact with a cat's or dog's mouth needs antibiotics as they may have unseen injuries.
