Has anyone tried or have any info on using moss or spaghum fiber as a beding for squirrels' cages. I try to give Trooper a variety of ground cover for his outdoor cage and the latest one (tall grass sod) ended up shredded like if it went through a Cuisinart food processor.

I don't thing moss or spaghum would have anything that could be serious to his health as I believe they actually eat it when food is scarce in the wild.

Your comments will be appreciated,

I really like the combination of non-aromatic (oak, in this case) wood chips and dried leaves on top, which I have in one of my release cages. The chips provide a soft cushiony platform and the dried leaves are exactly what my releases want to line their nest boxes with, so it all works. They also love diving in and out of the leaves and tunneling through them. My other release cage has a solid wood plank floor. While it's wonderful because nothing goes through it, nor can chipmunks burrow in, it gets very slimey after a rain because of residual veggie & fruit schmutz that gets thrown around and then crushed.
