I need help with a baby. All I have on hand is doxycycline 20 mg. Baby is around 4 weeks old and 95 grams. I don't know how much or if I should even use. Please help.

Is there any chance you can get Ciprofloxacin from a friend or relative? All you need is one pill.
Is the doxycycline 20mg a tablet?
Do you have a 1cc syringe?

The doxycycline is liquid from my dog's prescription. Nobody else around here has any antibiotics left over.

How old is the med?
Is that 20mg/ml?

Yes, it is 20mg/ml. It is from 3/13/2015.

Was it from the manufacturer as a liquid or was it a powder reconstituted with water?
Does it have an expiration date on the bottle?
karriemed

It says expiration 6/13/2015.

Oh crap. Doxycycline is one of the only antibiotics that shouldn't be used after it expires. It breaks down into potentially toxic byproducts that can have adverse effects on the kidneys.
Are you SURE that's all you have? Somewhere in the medicine cabinet a single antibiotic pill.

Penicillin 500mg

Ok...I think my dog vet is going to refill the doxycycline but they won't be back in office until 2 to approve the refill. I'll call them around 2:30 to see if it's approved. If so, how much, how often and for how long?

She has made it through the night and the clicking is now almost non existant. I really didn't think she would make it through the night because of how hard she was struggling for every breathe. She is a little fighter! Maybe I should name her Ronda Rousey. Lol

For the record it was doxycycline 20mg that was used for this little girl. Third dosage was given about and hour ago and now no more mouth breathing and I can't hear the clicks anymore. ..just that fast. Wow! I can't believe how quick these little guys can come back from the brink like that! So relieved! :bliss:grin3:wave:sqrrl7:jump

Fresh doxy, not the expired! Just to clarify that. Lol

Here are some pics of this precious baby. I have 4 pics to post. For some reason, they're giving me a fit trying to post so if I have to I'll make 4 separate posts. :tilt
This was a critically ill baby last night. This was a case where the drug of choice (Cipro or Baytril) was not available. We had to work with what she could get. I REALLY did NOT want to use expired doxycycline. I knew the doxycline is broad spectrum and could work but I wasn't sure if it would work fast enough. Doxycycline is bacteriostatic as opposed to bacteriocidal. With a life threatening infection you usually need a bacteriocidal drug.
When she was able to get fresh doxycycline last night by getting approval to refill an old script the baby was dosed with doxycycline (in the vets parking lot). :grin2
It was touch and go last night. Late last night I was asked how long it would take to work because it was heartbreaking to watch the baby struggle. I didn't know the answer to that. Karriemed sat up with her all night so that if she passed she wouldn't be alone. I'm very thankful that IT WORKED. The baby is improving and I couldn't be happier. :grin2

Thanks karriemed. While it is important to get antibiotics on board as soon as possible, never underestimate the power of love and touch that will give a baby the will to fight. You gave her the will to fight by holding her and loving her last night. That's something that no drug can do. :grouphug I'm very happy for you and your baby. Do we have an official name? :grin2

So far calling her Penny, after my friend that had the unfortunate fate of having to hear the baby hit the ground. I'm glad I missed that!

Oh Penny is beeeutiful :klunk poor, poor lil one....she looks like she took quite a fall...with the blood around her nose and the swollen lip :sadness some of the mouth breathing may have been due to blood in the nose :shakehead Penny is so lucky to have come into your care :Love_Icon and you were blessed to come into HRT's care :Love_Icon a win/win :great You probably saved her live...by being there...as HRT mentioned the touch and feel of another living being will sometimes pull them through...I really believe when weak and injured "and" alone ...sometimes they just go....it's nature's way of showing mercy:sadness but lil Penny had you there to hold her here :bowdown I hope she continues to improve :please
HRT do you think the clicking came from aspirating blood...since she had not been fed :dono I sure hope she's going to be ok....did it look like blood coming from her rectum? I believe it was the last pic :thinking could some have gone into her tummy too....and that's why it's there ....I'm praying for this lil one and her personal guardian angel :please

I don't know Sweeper. I assumed she had been fed because she was passed from the original finder to karriemed. Maybe I missed that. With her struggles to breath last night I doubt the clicks were from aspirated blood. I doubt she would have survived if that was the case. :dono Don't really know.

At first I think the clicking was coming from the nose bleed. But I'm wondering if inhaling the blood may have caused the pneumonia or if maybe she already had it and mom may have chunked her out, knowing she was sick. Whichever it was, it definitely turned into pneumonia in the end. She was struggling so hard to breathe.
My friend was out in her backyard smoking when she heard her smack the ground. She said she don't know how she survived at all with as loud as she hit, and she was just several inches from hitting some big rocks that are around the tree. She said she can still hear that thump and the screaming baby in her head. So glad I wasn't there to witness that.
She didn't have blood in her poo like if there were internal injuries (I think her face broke her fall), but it is really dark like she probably swallowed a good bit of blood.

The bloody nose pick was from Thursday night after I got her home. My friend found her at 8:30 that morning. I took off work at 12, went home to get a few supplies and made the hour and a half drive over there. We tried to get formula in her but between her face hurting and trouble breathing she didn't want much but we did get some water in her.

Unfortunately I can't just turn and walk away from something that's injured...especially a baby. I'd even be hard headed enough to bring home an injured skunk if I found one. Lol. Hope it doesn't happen though! :osnap:skwredup:banstick:wash

:grin2 She's a lucky one for sure but I'm not so sure she landed heads up.
I think her punkin head face planted the ground. :( Poor Penny. I don't know how they survive those falls. You know I never thought about it... them screaming when they hit the ground. That really makes me sad. :sadness I'm so glad she had you and your friend to save her.

Without your help she wouldn't still be here. I wouldn't have had a clue what to do since I couldn't get any Baytril. You and others on this board are responsible for a flyer and now 2 greys surviving trauma, not to mention countless others that you may never know about. This board has been a complete blessing for me. :bow:grouphug:serene
