View Full Version : Are HHB's much darker than in this picture? Is 2 days without refrigeration okay?

My guess is that everything is fine, but I wanted to double check before feeding to my wild. My blocks are almost black, very dark. And after the package arrived, it sat in my 70 degree apartment for about 2 days before I put it in the refrigerator. (This is because it was my first order and I didn't open the package immediately. Just want to make sure my squirrel doesn't get sick.)

They should be a nice dark brown, yes. What you want to look for on them are mold spots -- flecks of white and whiteish green. Do NOT feed moldy blocks. In the future, always refrigerate your blocks immediately. This is the "down side" of having pure, non-treated foods free of preservatives: they do not stay safe if not refrigerated. (That's why preservatives were invented in the first place, so food would last forever on a shelf, like Twinkies :grin2.)

On another note. I too keep them in my refrig because I go through them fast.
BUT they CAN mold in your refrig IF you don't use them within a couple + weeks
sometimes.
If you keep them in your freezer, you can't go wrong. Take out what you need the
night before and you'll be fine.

Throwing this out there: I don't feed them too often to spoiled wild squirrels (outside). If they don't eat the whole thing, the HHBs get stashed and I don't want to take the chance that squirrel or another will eat it later when it's moldy. If your wilds aren't that spoiled, they'll likely eat them all up in one sitting. If they are spoiled, consider cutting them in half - the block...not the squirrel. :pokeIf you notice them stashing even bits of the halves, then I'd feed HHBs every other day or whatever works.
