buddy is a fox squirrel and will be 5 yrs. old in august, well in mid nov.2015 buddys cheek was very swollen. vet pulled acouple bad molars, after a week or so swelling was down and he was back to normal, then a week or so later i noticed cheek swollen, gave him a week of amoxicillin, then about 2 weeks ago i noticed he was sluggish, inactive and loss of appetite, so i took him back to vet, and she tested his stool and he had coccidia she sent us home with 20 day supply of albon, she said it would take at least 5 days before i would notice any improvements, but since being to vet he has developed the runs, i give him pedialyte since he dosent want to eat or drink, i also give him homeade organic applesauce with a dab of honey, well its been 7 days his been on albon and ive not really noticed any improvements, and when i was giving him his meds and foiod today he had bloody diarrhea on his butt, is this normal with coccidia, please help im gonna call vet this morning ! THANKS ! TIM (BUDDYS HUMANE )

I think I remember you and Buddy! So sorry to hear he isn't feeling well. First thing I notice is that the applesauce and honey are likely contributing to his loose stool. Sugar can really make stool looser so I would change that. You can give a bit of sweet potato baby food. Be sure it is just sweet potato and has no added sugar. It is binding. Be sure to give extra hydration of water without sugar if possible for now. Loose stool causes dehydration so that can cause a lack of appetite.

If you microwave a slice it will mash easily. Sometimes they like to pick it up in a cooked slice too. Cooking brings out the flavor i think.

Carafate is an ulcer medicine. Is that what the vet said they were going to give Buddy?

I just googled that as well, because I've never heard of it.
Ulcers? :thinking

It coats the stomach to protect it from digestive acids. It's not absorbed so maybe it has the same effect in the lower GI tract.

Thank you HRT4SQRLS, it just seemed an "odd" choice to me.
HEMINOW do NOT give Pedialyte for any more than 24 hours.
Well Buddy take plain water?
If he has diarrhea, he needs to stay hydrated.

SammysMom

HEMINOW

its on the darker side
SammysMom

I think that the darker it is, the farther up toward the stomach it is from. Maybe that is why the prescription for a stomach med. :dono

i hope it starts helping fast he is feeling lousy ! ive cleaned him up several times today due to being a bloody mess, on his butt, testicles and tail, his rectum looked irritated and slightly swollen, i figure its from having diarrhea the past several days !

Be sure to give extra hydration, but as I said earlier, easy on the sugar. You can use a but of Preparation H on his poor bottom if it is swollen. It might make it feel a bit better. Or A&D ointment for diaper rash.

Even with the understanding he has coccidia, I'm a bit surprised with the "unusual" bleeding your vet is continuing the Albon.
Bleeding is one of the adverse side effects of Sulfadimethoxine and generally speaking is a big red flag that the particular
animal's system is not tolerating it. Sulfadimethoxine also has been known to cause kidney issues in those sensitive to the
medication or with prior kidney issues. :dono

I wondered about that Step. Maybe Baycox and even Flagyl would be better. It sounds like the Albon is doing more harm than good for this little guy.

With the reaction he's having I'd personally stop it if just to see where we stand before continuing and
possibly having it do irreversible harm, that amount of bleeding is no where near normal expectations. :shakehead

:dono i was doing some research on coccidia, and did read that it could cause bloody stools !
HEMINOW

i also was thinking i should stop the albon and ask the vet and she said to continue with it, and that the bleeding was one of the symptoms of the coccidia ! but like you i feel uneasy with it !

I think the question is whether the bloody stool started before or after the medication.
HEMINOW

he just started having soft stools an runs (no blood) the day i took him to vet, the blood was first noticed a couple days ago, after being on albon aprox 5 days !

In this case, both the illness and the treatment may cause bleeding, so it is difficult to determine whether or not the Albon made the bleeding start. Albon has lost a great deal of its effectiveness with coccidia in recent years, so if you can get Baycox I would suggest it ASAP. You could also try SMZ-TMP which is very slow-acting but may eventually work.

Amazon does have it, NOT prime so it would take longer to get, 250 ml. 5%
AND the price is $104.90 :eek
Even if someone sent this to you, it would take as long as the vet.

Can your vet call around to other vets?
Try places that sell reptiles, OR a farm supply store,
it's used in sheep and cattle, they may be able to guide you
as to where to get it.
Edit: Try this place, they may overnight, not sure.

Other vets in your area may have it in stock. You might want to call around and if you find one who has it, have your vet call them. When did the bleeding start? Was it a few days after the Albon started?
Did the coccidia actually show when tested or is it an assumption from the symptoms that it is coccidia?
I am leaving for work, so if anyone else could respond when Hemi does, thank-you!

Just make sure you know the strength of the Baycox.
Typically 2.5% and 5%
AND Buddy's weight. :thumbsup

Just a couple of really important questions.
Did the bleeding start before you started on the albon?
Did your vet actually see Buddy and did Buddy get a fecal done?
I am going to start reading from the beginning, but I'm thinking if
your vet did NOT see Buddy, this may be something that even Baycox
can't cure. We need to know exactly what we are treating.
Can Buddy go back to see your vet today?
