View Full Version : SEIS in Costa Rica can't PEE.... 24 hours.

We think Seis is Unable to PEE ! ! !
This morning Stosh mentioned that Seis only did a few little spots of
pee after sleeping all night. Last evening when I took her out to pee she would not, seemed to want
to, but would start scratching her tummy with a back foot then just stand still. Did that several times then
wanted to go to bed.
All day today I tried to keep an eye on her, see how much she peed...... through the day the ONLY pee I ever
saw was while she was in one play room ---- only a few "DROPS".... not a real PEE. In the afternoon I let
her out in the living room with me but she started screaming and crying and clucking....... she finally stopped
when I let her go into a play room........ later in the afternoon she totally freaked out jumping all over the
floor in the living room, bouncing off cages, running down the hallway.... I was finally able to get her and we gave
her Infant Ibuprofen. I was concerned that maybe that way her way of relating PAIN...... but I had no clue
what was/is going on with her. I offered her liquids through out the day I believe at one point she took
15 cc of coconut water..... I trying to keep her hydrated as her
appetite of late has not been as good as usual and I was unsure just how much she has been drinking..... I know
she has drank some as I can hear her at her water bottle.
Tonight was a repeat of last night only to a greater extent.... Seis would squat like she wanted to pee..... nothing
would happen, then she would pull up on front foot close to her body.... a short time later she would start to scratch
her tummy with a back foot...... she did this multiple times as she moved around the floor over a period of about
10 minutes.... then she jumped up on me and wanted to go to bed.
She did not cry out nor whimper...... just seemed maybe confused.
I tell ALL THIS DETAIL because I have no real idea WHAT is happening and am uncertain just what might be very
important.
We put photo's on here a few days back of Seis's swollen vulva.
Help is needed here, Please.

Try to get Seis to pee by stimulating her.
She may be sensitive in that area, so just be as gentle as you can be.
I wonder if she has a UTI, as the symptoms of her straining to pee
indicate that could be the problem.
Do you have any Baytril?
I will direct others to your thread as well.

Don't have Baytril.....Got dosing for SMZ-TMP..... but just dosed Seis with Ibuprofen.... can I still
go ahead and give her the SMZ....? Could mixing them hurt her ? ? ? ?

I agree.
If the swollen vulva mentioned is due to her estrous cycle,
developing a uti is not all that uncommon among some.
I'd treat her for a uti.
If stimulating don't work you may need to express her bladder
if she gets to that point.

I don't know if this is really recommend but TW had issues with painful urination. I had him on ABs for a UTI but he still acted like it was very painful every time he went. I started to give him a 3ml syringe of cranberry juice mixed with water once a day. It seemed to help him.

Thank you everyone. We have the dosing for the antibiotic which we will
give to her tomorrow morning.
She was/is simply much too stressed out tonight to pull her from her nest box
again.
And, yes, we will be giving her cranberry juice in the hope that will help as well.
We will update when we can.

Many prayers for our sweet friend Seis... Can you say if her tummy seemed hard or bloated before she went to bed?

Costa Rica time: 5:20 am.
SEIS wandered around on the tile floor...didn't pee a DROP !!
She has started a new "move"--she pancakes...spread-eagled, back legs flat out, belly on the floor.
I think she is enjoying the cool, ceramic tiles--it feels good. Her "bottom" felt warm, when she was sitting on my shoulder, I thought ( hoped) that she did a little pee on my shirt, but when she jumped off, my shirt was totally dry, so it was her body heat the I felt, not pee.
We dosed her with the SMZ and some Ibruprofin.
She ate just a little. We will start with stimulation and warm water stroking, and expressing in a little while.

Here are a couple videos on how to express a bladder of a squirrel. You need to do this. But if you can, I suggest you soak her lower end rubbing her belly down to her groin, to see if you can get her to go. Sometimes just a soak in warm water will do it. Hold her and check to feel her bladder. If you fell around where you would expect a belly button to be, you should feel a round area. I would imagine at this point, it should be pretty easy to feel. You want to get your thumb and index fingers at about 11 and 1 and slowly slide fingers down putting gentle pressure on her bladder. Slow and steady. Yes, it hurts, but just go slowly. Do you have metacam? Many times inflammation of the urethral tubes will cause this. Straining makes them swell more. SMZ is a good choice for UTI, but you really should also add in the metacam for the inflammation if you have it. (although with giving the ibuprofen, you cannot give the metacam today. Ibuprofen has some anti-inflammation properties, but the metacam is much better and is also much better at pain control.) Do not push too hard, you want some pressure but not to injure the bladder.

Continuing the SMZ and probiotics 2 to 3 hours later..... Probiotic's Seis had refused anything
that I added the powdered Probiotic to.... until I mixed it with a very liquidy type of vanilla
Yogurt which is to be drank rather than eaten.... called Bio-Defense. Plus I had to add a touch of honey.
I am also giving it to the Dude and Luna.... her stool is very soft again.
AND......... although Seis did not pee as soon as she got up, which is the norm...... she did a great pee
once she was placed in a playroom.
Also working at giving Seis the cranberry and water.
She appears to be on her way to mending.

Thought I'd post a quick update on Seis's UTI.....
she is PEEING regularly, her vulva is just about back to normal size...
she has 4 1/2 or 5 days left to take the meds. I am thinking 14 days,
to be certain the infection does not return.
Thank you every one for helping.

As noted at the beginning of this thread Seis was having
problems peeing and her vulva was swollen the beginning the first of last month..........
A week back I noticed again Seis's vulva once again was VERY SWOLLEN....
she must have been rubbing it as it was also very irritated.
Her eating also slacked off and she eats little. I waited a week thinking maybe she
was really going into estrus.... but, at this point I do not believe that is the answer.
She is extremely agitated, jumpy. just does not feel good. So far she SEEMS to be peeing
fine.
I have given her Infant Ibuprofen several times to ease any pain/discomfort and inflammation.
I had planned to start her on SMZ ... today but decided it might be better to hear from a few
professionals....
I have to say I am much concerned, esp with her acting agitated and acting like she wants something,
as in food, but won't take much of what I offer.... that is what Melagro had begun to do too......... so,
this scares me..
Waiting for FEEDBACK !

Also bumping this up. I would continue to give her ibuprofen as needed. Maybe offer her some extra treats to see if that help her appetite? Not sure about the SMZ, do you think this could be some type of UTI?

When you dosed with SMZ in February, did you dose for 7-10 days? Do you still have SMZ dosing directions.

Yes to all questions.... Seis is still swollen. Nothing has changed....
the three males show no interest in her.
She has not tried to build a nest.
Last three days LUNA has begun to exhibit the same symptoms minus the
swelling....... as of this writing.
She acts like a jumping bean, can't get comfortable, very edgy, irritable, very little appetite.... Seis has been this way for at least a week
or longer.
I thought estrus maybe...... but this is going on a rather long time..... Uhhhh, I think.

Seis is getting the meds twice a day...... she is absolutely INSANE......
Eats little...... jumps like crazy in her cage for hours - she does usually jump
back and forth.. back and forth, off and on throughout the day.....
but now it is really bad. When I let her out in
a play room she is no longer happy..... today off and on she was crying and
squeaking esp when I would enter or approach her........... bummer
no longer is she allowed free time in the living room, she will be fine/quiet for
a short time then all of a sudden it starts.....she jumps all over
the place, climbs like crazy all over, and simply goes berserk...
I can't get her and have to chase her back to her cage..... not fun for
either of us.
She seems to be peeing ok.
I wanted to give her Ibuprofen on the chance that she is uncomfortable..... Hunted
up and down looking where I THOUGHT I saw info IF Ibuprofen can be used when using SMZ....
Dose a certain amount of time need to be between the two..... sure would like to know.

Sooooo......... can a female be in heat and males just ignore them???
And how long would the female remain swollen.... Seis was swollen at the very least a week prior to
medicating with SMZ.....
I can not judge by LUNA as she goes into estrus every 3 months.... or less... she is in now and getting
Ibuprofen...... she stays in her box a lot.
And for the last 3 or 4 days JD is not eating well and today has soft stool and a little smelly.... not certain if it is
just a belly ache or something BAD..... He will have to stay in his cage tomorrow morning until I can
view his stool and give it a sniff test too...... had to scrub the foyer playroom sticks and floor as he
had been in there for a couple of hours when I realized
his stool was bad.
Sorry thread jacked my own thread = just so much going on here.
