Hi, my new baby squirrel is around 5-6 weeks old and is really difficult when it comes to feeding time. She don't want the milk, she turns her head and gets the formula everywhere ( it's also really hard to get the milk off her because she hates that too). When I get some into her mouth she drinks it kind of. I've only had her a few days and am worried that she might not be hydrated enough. She likes clementines and sometimes nuts but I don't think that is all she should eat because I thought she still needed milk. I've never had this happen before, the other squirrel I had loved milk.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to stop her from hating milk or do you think that I should start putting her on solid-ish foods with only a little milk.

What kind of formula are you using and how are you mixing it? Are you giving it really very warm?

I'm using powdered goat milk that janda gave us, I'm also using warm water that I heat up in a tea pot and mixing it with the powder in a measuring cup.

I know that with my baby flyers I use Esbilac powdered puppy formula. Mixing it 2 water to 1 powder. It has a good amount of protein in it so is good for little flyers who need additional protein. You don't want to heat the water to a boil as this will kill probiotics in the formula. I use the hottest tap water and mix the formula before going to bed for the next day. It should sit in the fridge for at least 4 hours before being fed. That gives all of the dehydrated particles a chance to absorb the water thoroughly. That makes it more digestible for them. THen, you fill the syringe with the cold formula and put the nipple on the syringe and put it into a cup of hot water to warm. Their body temp is higher than ours and that means the formula will feel very warm to you. Warmer than you would give to a human baby, but not hot enough to burn. You can get the formula and Petco and or PetSmart. Is what you are giving goat milk or goat milk formula?

Once you get the correct formula, buy some Stoneyfield Yobaby yogurt - you can use any of the flavors. They come in 6 packs with two different flavors in each pack. Make the Esbilac up at 2 parts water, 1 part powder, and 1/2 part Yobaby. They LOVE the taste. When she is eating that well, let us know - you will want to slowly add some heavy whipping cream to the mixture once the yogurt is accepted. Baby flyers need lots of fat.

I am fairly new to squirrels but would like to make this suggestion.

I believe it is wise to start them on Blocks as the first step to a healthy diet when ready and maybe a small amount of veggies. Once they are eating blocks fairly well then you should introduce greens and more veggies. Fruit should come last as they have an amazing sweet tooth and will choose fruits over everything else. Nuts are treats a few times a week.
Formula can be fed for as long as they will take it.

Someone correct me if I am wrong please.

Clementine is a cute name!!

She is healthy and very active, the only problem is that she likes the milk I think but hates the syringe I use to feed her. I'm not sure if I should try a bottle with a rubber tip or continue trying to use the syringe.

Thank you, I really appreciate the offer but we have just ordered one after you posted about the miracle nipple. If for some reason it doesn't arrive we might still take you up on that offer, haha :D.
