I am brand new to the forum and need help. I have a flyer whose rear leg was caught in a rat snap trap. He is dragging it and I am assuming it is pretty badly broken. I have him in a small cage with water, apples, peanut butter and a blanket. I am not sure what to do. I released him from the trap about 3 hours ago. I am not sure how long he was in there. Any help would be MUCH appreciated, thanks!!

she can help you.

Meet Roxy. She is an adult Southern Flying Squirrel that got caught in a rat snap trap. She was sedated this morning, had an xray and her front right paw splinted. She has a break in her femur that was shown on the xray. I believe she also has a small fracture on her right rear leg that did not show on xray because she doesnt have much use of that leg either. She is otherwise healthy, alert and eating well. Hopefully she will heal to be releasable but if not she will remain with me. I will use her as an educational animal.

Here are some pictures:

I am definitely smitten and also devastated. Looking at the xray closer I have discovered that there is a complete bone break at hip joint. The vet missed it. Now I have to attempt to stabilize it enough to heal. She is too small for surgery and pins etc.

Hi I love Lucy, you might want to touch base with SassySquirrel. She has a female flyer named Lulu. She came in with a broken leg. All attempts to stabilize or splint the limb were unsuccessful because the bulk was just too much for her tiny frame.

It was decided to leave it alone. It did heal and she is doing well. The healed broken limb doesn't cause her any problems.

Poor baby girl :Love_Icon if it's not splintable I guess the best you can do is a very small enclosure--but I'm talking out of turn because I don't know. and of course she's wild and may not take to close quarters. Pain meds? can she take them and will that help her rest?

She is on metacam. She is fiesty given her crippled body. She tried to bite me lol but her mouth is too small to do any damage. Not a compliant patient at all.

She has been eating well and hasnt taken off the splint on her front paw. She is not happy being captive but hasnt tried to chew her way out yet. She will never be releasable because even on the off chance her femur fuses with hip bone it will not be in proper place to be fully functionable. I have to wait a few weeks for a better idea on prognosis.

Yesterday I was afraid baby would be cold so I put a heating pad under the part of the bin with her cave. Mama has been staying in there so I havent checked on baby. I am afraid to upset her. She needs to remain calm and nurse the baby. She was upset last night and ripped off her splint. When I first discovered she had a lil one she moved away from baby twice. I think it was because I upset her. She is eating and drinking well. The baby only has a chance to survive with her. This is a difficult situation given her broken legs. I have to pray that Mama will be able to care for baby.

This is difficult.
The situation is strange for Mama, and having a baby only adds
stress to her.
You can only do so much, and as you said, pray that Mom remains calm,
after breaking her legs, being in captivity, and giving birth.
Now that's a tall order. :shakehead

Oh wow...:eek you have your hands full :grouphug I agree...give her space and quiet :dono you're doing all you can do ....I know it's got to be scary...but as you said ...the baby is only going to make it if momma steps up :please I sure hope her leg mended some before the splint came off...hopefully if she's quiet and stays close to the baby...she won't do any additional damage to her leg :please good Lord...when it rains it pours :facepalm praying for you all:Love_Icon

If she will take a bit of extra calcium it wouldn't help since her leg needs it and so does the baby. I hope she does the good mama thing...:grouphug:Love_Icon:grouphug

From the moment I discovered her femur was broken at the hip joint I have questioned my decision to attempt rehabilitation. She must be in agony and terrified being captive. I wanted her to have a second chance. She wound up in this situation because of human error. When she gave birth it somehow justified her suffering in captivity. I thought just maybe the baby would survive and she would heal. Now I feel like another has suffered because of my decision. I am still not ready to give up on her... Not even now. :boohoo:boohoo

Just catching up to thread and see she had a baby but lost in, I'm so sorry. :(

I wonder outside of concentrating on fractures why this pregnancy was not detected on the 1/11 x-rays?
My understanding is flyers carry on an average of 40 days? Also can't help but wonder if she could possibly
be carrying more?

As for baby's demise... All the stress on momma with her broken bones, the metacam, the x-rays, baby was
already compromised. Poor momma.:(
You are the best thing that's happened for her. :grouphug

The vet did not even see her broken femur, never mind the pregnancy. I discovered it from a picture of the xray, along with her very obviously dangling leg. She hasnt delivered anymore babies, I hope she doesnt have any more complications. I have seen newborn fliers before and he looked full term.
