The wonderful Pixiepoo referred me here with my concern. So I am a Navy reservist living in central Va. with two 3 1/2 year old flyers. For about 2 and a half years I have been best buds with my little flying fur goblins. I am deploying for a bit over half a year and I live in a state where this puts me at great concern I would have to surrender my flyers... I want to make sure they are well cared for so I can sleep easy knowing I can be reunited with them and that they will be happy and healthy while I'm gone.
Here is a picture of Bitter and Spicy begging the best they can.

Hmmm...I live round abouts ....I have no experience with flyers tho....are they friendly? For instance, my greys would not do well being fostered :dono I don't imagine you'd have to be best friends....but as far as cage cleaning, if they are able to get run time and then go back to their cage....I just don't know how they would do going 6 mos without being handled :thinking

I'm in Virginia too--and I've had flyers--thing is, I have to go to Iowa in April, coming back in June. This isn't something I want to do, it's a hubby thing. I don't have an inch in the car for another cage. I will keep my feelers out for someone who can help you. I'm guessing your babies are VERY bonded to you and it's going to be hard for them to adapt to a new environment.

I'm not in Virginia, but I'll be praying that you find the right person to be a foster for your babies. Have you contacted a wildlife rehabilitator in your area? I'll pray for your deployment to be quick and safe. I served 4 years in the Airforce.

They are fairly cage/nest territorial. It took about 3-4 months for them to warm up to me to where they could be handled easily. The lady squirrel is very weary of traveling too far from the cage, but Spiceman will run headfirst into any room/situation (He thinks he is big and tough).

Thank you,
It would need to be before the end of next month. They were about 1 years old when I took them in so they are definitely more bonded to each other than they are to me.

Thank you. I've done about 10 years of service now, about 3 of them in the reserve. I have not contacted any rehabilitators in my area yet as I am concerned about potentially having to surrender them for good.

Thank-you for your service to our country! You are right about not contacting rehabilitators in your area if they are not legal pets in VA.
Maybe someone knows someone who might be able to do this? If it was a matter of the expense, would you be able to provide for them while they were being fostered? Not saying this for myself, but it might bring someone in who wouldn't be ab;e to otherwise. You never know...:dono

Spiceman is an equal mix of spunky and ornery, he dreams/plays big, but not always nice. Bitter is very shy and timid, but has the occasional playful streak.

I'm guessing they like being handled and played with! :grin3

Oh I would definitely provide an agreed upon fair compensation, as well as all my current treats/toys and supplies.

Uhmm... BarnYardBen... I'm assuming because you're a barnyard man that you know they WILL breed. Right?
Did you want to be a grandpa because you certainly will be. :peace :jump

I wouldn't recommend letting them breed because there are not enough homes for flyers.
Those 2 could become 7 before you know it. Just sayin'. :tilt

I had taken them in when they were about 1- 1 1/2 years old, the former care taker could no longer handle them for medical reasons. They are pretty heavily bonded to each other and when I initially tried to separate them into adjacent cages and it did not go very well. Being apart clearly had stressed them out (not eating, bare patches from over grooming, less lively and more sullen) . I was cautioned heavily against neutering because of the high mortality risk. Definitely not the most ideal of situations but up until today I would have had no issues taking time and giving proper care/attention to a litter. Babies or no babies I'm content as long as they are happy and healthy.

And there is absolutely NOTHING cuter than a box full of baby flyers--of course there's mama guarding her brood :shark:shark:shark snapsnap! I WILL help if you get up against a wall. BUT Iowa looms and may need to hand them off to another loving person for two months. We'll figure this out. Your guys are sooooooooo sweet!

Sweeper- You should look into getting and fostering these little guys. I can talk you through this and you are so close. They usually love people, and you and they should all fall in love in no time at all! You'll wonder why you've ever had anything except flyers!

Married to the marine corps here but willing to help you sailors on occasion. God knows us army girls carried your butts when I was stationed in San Diego. I'mcurrently in pa on hubs recruiting duty but headed to our owned home in NC on new orders mid April. Could potentially foster if still needed/ available. I will travel every few months back to pa for family visits so that takes care of their return ticket :) I'm a vet tech in a small animal hospital with a " wildlife friendly" veterinarian who has helped me with my own 6 month old grey squirrel who will be released this March ( I have so much anxiety about saying goodbye to my cutie patootie).
