I just recently purchased a flying squirrel from what I believe to have been a breeder :/ but I wanted to give the flyer a wonderful home
Not sure on what he was keeping her in, but we have a brand new 5ft cage for her. As well as new hanging toys. Nest box. Wheel. Fleece etc. And we bought a lot of different varieties of nuts and carrots, lettuce, apples, grapes. But he was just feeding her acorns and pecans only. And he said she was drinking out of a bowl. But we've had her for 2 days. She did however have another flyer with her but we let my mother in law have the other because he said they were not bonded. And they did not act if they were bonding when we got them. Anyways my problem is...she hasn't been eating or drinking of what we've seen. We tried to give her meal worm and she wouldn't eat it but we did offer half of a pecan and she ate that. That's the only thing we have seen her eat or drink. How can I ensure she is getting what she needs. I do have goat milk on hand but he told me she was 8 mo old but really, I think she is younger than that. She has all her furr and she's a bit skitish but she's been letting us pet her in a bonding pouch and holding her in our hand in the cage. What csn I do to ensure she's getting all she needs??

I posted this on your other thread, but will paste it here, too.

I know they won't starve themselves, but I'm not sure about dehydration. Does she pass the pinch test? Is her water being offered in the same type of container as before?

You should buy some HHBs for her to get her on the right track diet wise http://www.henryspets.com/hi-protein-blocks/ Look into the pure calcium they sell too - you can dust the mealworms with that to off set the phosphorus

Here's the healthy diet thread to help offset the phosphous in various foods, too http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/s...ght=flyer+diet

Nuts (and fruits) should be fed very sparingly after she eats her healthy foods - eventually she'll give in!

She could be in mourning from being rehomed and separated from her friend. They're colony animals and often feel more comfortable with a friend - granted there are exceptions, but it's a thought

I would just add in that if she was living with another flyer and they weren't bickering/fighting constantly, I think there is a good chance they were bonded. My boys rehab bicker sometimes but they would be very upset of I separated them. If she is new and shy, chances are she is eating and drinking when you aren't watching. Try adding a drinking tube water bottle (mine love theirs). Petco sells them. They are all glass with a white metal cover. Try offering her a block of some sort or monkey biscuits. My rescue guys who were raised on a bad diet liked the blocks, fruits and vanilla yogurt the best. Good luck! :)

Flyers are creatures who live in colonies. She is very likely mourning the loss of her friend. Is there any chance you could get her back? It is much better for flyers to have other flyers to live with.
As far as what she needs to eat, nuts need to be VERY limited and she needs rodent block. I use HHBs for my grays and my flyers as they are the best nutrition. Take a look at the list that was recommended and follow it for a good healthy flyer.
If a child was given nothing but candy, they would be hard pressed to be convinced that broccoli and green beans were better for them. We can't offer the option of nuts and not healthy food or MBD will be the end result. This is non-negotiable.
If it is at all possible, get her friend back for her and I would bet you will have a much happier friend. :Love_Icon
