Please help! My little Louie is about 4 months old. Very healthy and happy. He is currently on Kaytee forti-diet rodent blocks. I put a small handful a day in his bowl. He also gets some apple and tomato daily or some other veggie. As a snack I will give him 1 or 2 acorns in the afternoon or a nut ball. The hair loss started in a circle and now is growing. It looks like 2 circles next to each other. I started giving him a small bit of coconut oil and also rubbing some on the spot about 3 days ago. There is no scab just hair loss. What could this be?

He doesn't go outside or have contact with any other animals. The spot had been there about 2 weeks now and is growing.

Thanks in advance!
Amy

It looks like he is rubbing it off while sticking his snoot through the cage bars to chew them.

This is typically caused by chewing on the bars of the cage. They lean their foreheads against the bar and chew the one below it. The only way to clear that up is to try distracting him from doing that -- I put nice pine boards into my cages and it usually works.

I thought so at first too but he doesn't really chew on the bars, at least not from what I am seeing.

Is there anywhere else he can rub on accidentally? Lounging around in a hammock or on top of a cube maybe?

EDIT:
His diet? :thinking Sounds like he needs more veggies, but that shouldn't cause hair loss.
Also, be careful with acorns - there's a very toxic mold that can grow inside of them. Always cut them open first to make sure the meat inside is perfect! :thumbsup

To ensure the very best nutrition with little struggle on his part, you can order some Henry's Blocks - he's only got to eat 2 of these a day and they're more tasty than Kaytee! http://www.henryspets.com/squirrel-diet/

Cutie, by the way!! :grin3

He seems to eat a bunch of the Kaytee blocks, like as many as I can put! Is that too much?? He loves grape tomatoes so I usually will cut up one or 2 and he eats all of it too. I need to get some kale and try that out next time I go to the store. He eats carrots too but isn't big in broccoli or cauliflower. He will eat a few green beans too if I have them. I want to strart the release process soon so I sure hope he isn't too spoiled to all this hand cut and fed veggies/fruit!

It probably is not this, but ringworm?

Doesn't ringworm cause hair to fall out more? Or maybe this is the beginning? :thinking
I've thankfully never had to deal with it,s o I could be completely wrong

Is the skin dry or flaky? Could be ringworm or mites. Has it spread?

I suspect rubbing it off while chewing on the bars .

But as tube suggested it could be ring worm.

I would keep an eye on it and if distracting from chewing the bars does not help then maybe a vet trip for a wood lamp check.

I had a flyer that had that. Scared me to death. I ever saw her chew the bars but she must have. I panicked cause she was just about to transfer to another rehabber for release when the spot appeared! I thought I had screwed something up. But she said it happens all the time.
