Our little paraplegic squirrel Victor has a VERY enlarged penis tonight, all red - it's like a huge bubble, as if the foreskin did not get back to cover the shaft. I find that the tip is rather dark and that worries me immensely. He seemed normal yesterday. I saw that tonite when I picked him up to go give him his bath.

When I gave him his bath I saw him urinate - apprently normally - and he poos normally. However his groin and belly seem all sticky and wet, constantly; even after I had dried him off well after his bath I found him all wet again a few minutes later. I didn't have any KY so I used some Polysporin to prevent it from drying. Now I find that the tip seems dark and I'm very worried.

My poor little guy needs help. Should I give him some Metacam? Antibiotics? Anything else I should do?

EDIT: I'd forgotten to mention that his testes are also huge. That too seems like a new development from today

Oh that poor little guy! Definitely metacam and I would start an antibiotic as well. What do you have for ABs?

Jeez I have no idea .....but it reminds me of what Luna...stosh's girl went through with her vulva:dono the only thing that comes to mind is something like preparation-h that is use for hemorrhoids...that helps them shrink down and back inside :dono poor baby....could he have been suckling himself or dragging his privates? I sure hope someone comes on that has some ideas :please hang in there :Love_IconVictor :Love_Icon

Good thinking with the Prep H! The Metacam addresses the internal swelling so it is very important and the AB will help if it is a UTI situation.

I have Clavamox, Clyndamycin, Amoxycillin for antiobiotics. Wen spreading some of the Poly some of the skin came off the tip - necrotized I presume but there is no bleeding. This is not looking good at all. Maybe it had started already yesterday and I just had not seen it. :(

I also have some Bactrim.

I think that I would start with Clavamox. Bactrim might help, but it is slow acting. Do you have the dosing?

OK Clavamox it shall be. Yes, I have the dosing, thanks.

How often do I give the Metacam?

I know that Clavamox is twice a day.

Get your strongest glasses or a magnifying glass and check his penis very carefully to make sure something like a hair or fiber hasn't wrapped around it causing this.

A good, totally safe method to pull the swelling out is to dampen it with water and completely coat it in regular table sugar. You are kind of trying to make a solid "cast" from the sugar so use plenty. If he licks it - no problem.

The metacam is usually ONCE a day.
The first dose will be the loading dose.
The following days, cut that amount in half and
dose that, once.

Tnx Nancy, C M I will tell Iwonka about the sugar thing. I brought him there since hubby and I are running around like crazy this week (just bought another property).

I took our sweetie to the vet today and she (the vet) said it's the sheath itself that is all swollen. His penis itself seems OK and he urinates without a problem. Victor might have injured himself somehow, on something and I'm trying to check everythingin his cage. Vet said to continue the antibiotics (Clavamox) and Metacam and keep the injury lubrified at all times. Has to be cleaned 3 times a day and we have to keep a watch to make sure the swellilng doesn't get worse.

The sugar helps to bring down the swelling. Wet the penis and then take simple granulated sugar onto the penis. I am not sure why, but it helps to relieve the swelling. They even use this on men who have this issue.

Not much change as of today but some of the swelling has gone down. Vet recommended that we give the AABs a chance to start acting and make sure he stays lubricated.

Iwonka's following those instructions and making sure he stays clean and can pee well and sleep well.

I forgot to ask, where is the property you're buying?
Are you building a home on it?
I only ask because your home and yard are SO gorgeous,
I would hate to move.

We're not moving :) Just bought a duplex to help supplement old age pension income and, mostly, to ensure my oldest son will always have a roof over his head (he lives with Asperger's syndrome) while being able to live independantly. It's sort of an insurance policy for us. That property is not too far from where we live - some 15 minutes away.

EDIT: We don't want to move either. Long as I can still afford to live here I will. :bliss :grin3

Awe that's wonderful! :hug
15 minutes is perfect!
Glad you aren't moving, your place is spectacular!

Did you look with a magnifying glass to see whether a hair or string is around it? Seems strange it mushroomed up overnight.

Did you try preparation H? I had this happen to my dwarf squirrel and with him I discovered that his penis sheath had rolled up on the internal penis. I used a little coconut oil and rubbed it into it and gently rolled it back down with my fingers. It happened to him several times. I don’t know if he was self suckling or not but each time I did the same thing to unroll it. This is what his looked like.

OK, it isn't sugar water.

Clean the penis and leave it slightly damp. Pour table sugar on it and pack it around the penis. The slight moisture left on the penis will mix with the sugar and dissolve a bit of it, allowing the rest of it to stick together. Continue to add sugar and pack it around the penis until no more will stick. You are trying to build a solid sugar cast around the penis. It may take you a few minutes to construct it. Keep checking it, too - if it begins to soften add some more sugar.

Let it dry on there and leave it for several hours. Then, use water to dissolve it away. If it isn't all the way down at that point, do it again.

Sugar pulls moisture from the environment. If you have ever gone for the sugar in the sugar bowl after a humid weather stretch and had to chip it out you have experienced this. That is what you need to do with the tip of that penis and sugar is fast, painless and safe.

This "just happened" to my 7 year old male...Diesel. I noticed the tip of his penis just slightly protruding for about 2 days...It's December and I figured mating season blues? I have never noticed this from him before though, so it was odd to me. Two more days and he looked worse the first picture, red and swollen and completely protruding from the deeper inner bulb to the tip. His complete penis internals were out and there was no way I could help him get it back in. I tried the sugaring and it seemed to help it go down a minor bit. I added coconut oil all around the base and entire penile area and tried to gently pull the sheath back. It didn't work. I added a bit of Bacitracin with a bit of numbing agent in it and still couldn't get it to go back. He didn't seem in pain so I left him alone and hoped it would work itself out. The next morning the tip was dried out and darkening and I stressed about it becoming necrotic...or swollen enough that he could not urinate. This is Paraphimosis and needs emergency vet care. I had him seen that morning by a great vet where I live. (He told me to use KY jelly because it is more lubricating and that I didn't want his penis to dry out until I could get him in the next morning. He said that works better than the coconut oil or Vaseline I was using. He also said yes, to keep using the sugar paste.) They put him on Clavamox for 10 days and got the swelling down and put it back inside the sheath where it is supposed to be. He seems fine, a bit sore I guess from the visit...but hoping all will heal. All of this just happened yesterday.
The vet really didn't know why this happened...he felt maybe his age (?) ...although my past squirrel survived 12 years RIP, and I never experienced this. I know this can happen with the babies from suckling, even though I never had that happen either. He thought perhaps he was masturbating and messing around with it and this was the outcome. He really had no explanation. I just don't know what happened or why? But I surely never want him to go through this again!
Diesel is acting a little bit wobbly today, I assume he is sore.(He is urinating, so that's great.) Perhaps the antibiotics? He moves around fine, he just seems to stumble a bit in sitting upright to eat a seed. He is having to push up twice to sit on his hind legs, as if his balance is a bit off. I am hoping this will subside quickly in a few days after this trauma. I changed his bed completely, I just bought a new one to make sure it was clean as it could be and sterilized the cage and toys just to make sure everything was as pure and clean. Crossing fingers that he will be just fine in a few days. It had to have been a tough day for him! It was for me!

I am going to say that the vets diagnosis of masturbating is correct.

The picture above is of my little dwarf Joey. I’m convinced he did that to himself because it occurred several times. It never got to the point where I couldn’t roll the sheath back down over the penis using a little coconut oil, though.

Other members have posted that using an anti-hemorrhoid cream when this happens is helpful, because it contains an ingredient that helps reduce swelling.

Thanks for the response...He is on Clavamox and seems to be doing fine...appetite is down though. He refused a pecan which is unlike him...ever! But he did eat a bit of cooked spaghetti squash and the roasted seeds I made for him...if I peeled them and handed them to him. He has had 4 doses now and just seems to want to sleep a lot. He will come out of bed, but not interested in playing like normal. Just keeping my eyes on him, I figured the vet trip probably upset him a bit as well, although he did excellent, and they were really sweet to him. Fingers crossed this will soon pass.
