I found Butter after a bad storm over a year ago after she was blown out of her nest. She was a baby. I called every rehabber in my State and no one could take her as they all were full so I learned what I had to and through trial and error she grew into a very sweet and loving little girl.

Well she got out 2 days ago and I can't find her. I've put her cage out, I've put food out, it's not been touched. There are some squirrels in my tree and I'm pretty sure that's where she came from to begin with. Will they accept her? Can a pet go back to the "wild" I can't sleep and I'm heartbroken. Is this the best thing? It's raining here and I thought for sure that would make her come home.

I'm beside myself. :boohoo

Oh I'm so sorry you're so worried :hug in answer to your question....this is not an ideal release :dono but it's happened before and the squirrels did fine...even came back eventually for visits :Love_Icon other squirrels will treat her like "just another squirrel" they really aren't social creatures:( I would sit in the yard calmly....make be clacking some nuts together...I do not think she'll go back in her cage after being in the trees....chances are she'll be ok...but I would put food out and maybe some sort of nestbox....near your house....she won't be afraid of you so she may use it for shelter...put something of her's in there. Good luck :Love_Icon I hope she comes home soon ...if not soon...that she at least visits :Love_Icon I know your heart is broken and you're filled with worry...but try and remain positive:grouphug

Do not despair...:grouphug This is a very sad story which gets repeated endlessly. Keep on looking for her and don't be surprised if she appears out of nowhere. She could return to the wild, but very likely is right in your area watching you look for her. Keep putting out food and looking for her. Many prayers for her safe return either to you at home or to the trees with other squirrels.:Love_Icon

I finally found my baby! She's in the tree that I thought she was in but she wouldn't come down. She looks fine and I'm not going to stress about getting her back in if she's happy that's all I care about.

I'll make sure that she has food daily though. She was scratching a lot and that concerns me.

Anyway thank you and I will keep you posted.

So glad you found her! :grouphug

You can put a nestbox with some food grade diatomaceous earth in it to help ward away any fleas she may have.
