Something is going on with Petey's behind. It's been like this since yesterday. We put neosporine on it and waited to post until now... I'm kicking myself now for waiting.

He is having what seems like a mix of soft stools and this clear-ish goo...? It keeps getting stuck to his butt and I've been removing it. His anus seems HUGE to me, like very wide and gaping open, please see the photo. I've never seen this before.

Is this an infection? There is a foul odor coming from him and that plus the goo seems to me to indicate an infection. I have cipro 250 mg on hand, I would just need someone to PM me the dosing.

Nothing has changed in his diet in the last 2 weeks. He is 9 weeks old. I've been feeding him powdered esbilac 3x day plus 2 HHBs (hi-protein for babies) and veggies with 1 nut or 1 small piece of fruit as a treat each day. I've stopped giving him fruit as of yesterday. He is slightly less active than usual. His behind is obviously sensitive and he doesn't like me touching it. Please help!

Yes, he defiantly has some thing going on down there and needs some meds for it.
I have contacted a few people letting them know we need help with dosing, please
hang in there and try giving your little one some pedialyte to help hydrate him.

Homemade Pedialyte
1 cup warm water
1/4 tsp salt (teaspoon)
1 tbsp sugar (tablespoon)

Does the odor have a "sweet" smell at the end? It's hard to explain. It's an overall foul odor, but at the end of the whiff it reminds me of sweet.

The "goo"...I've found that it is usually the lining of the intestines...it's a gooey like substances that coats the inside of the intestinal tract to keep stuff sliding through. When we see it in large quantities it usually indicates a gastrointestinal issue (as you've explained).

It Does has a somewhat sweet smell at the end... At the last moment it actually smells idk..sugary?

What should I use topically ( if anything) to make him more comfortable?

In my experience, the sweet smell and a swollen anus = coccidia. Baytril/Cipro isn't going to work if it's coccidia.

You'll need Metronidazole & SMZ-TMP, or Albon, or Baycox. My personal preference is Baycox, then Albon, then Metro/SMZ.

Yikes! All I have is cipro and there's no vet around that will see him!

Ok I've looked up coccidia and it sounds like this is what it is except his stools are not yellow, they are brownish grey.

I found a place online that sells Baycox. Do I want the 2.5% or 5%??? Even if it isn't coccidia, I would still like to have treatment on hand. Also how many doses will he need? And should I go ahead and treat Pablo (cage mate) for it as well even though he isn't showing symtoms? I've separated them.

Hmmm...the cage mate. I don't think I'd treat the cage mate if there's no symptoms. Coccidia is highly contagious BUT, 2 years ago I did have 1 squirrel in a bin of 2 get it and the other never did.

I would get the Baycox 5%. (that's what I use) I always do the Treatment 2 (as printed on the paper that comes with the Baycox). Give one dose a day for 3 days and repeat in a week.

Some people will say this is a reptile dose not a mammal dose...and it most likely is as I don't think it matches the WMB dosing. This is how I use it and it works perfectly...hasn't let me down yet. I was advised to follow this dosing by 2 other rehabbers that use it regularly and told me about it.

The biggest thing with coccidia is keeping the squirrel, caging, and the bedding clean. It's transmitted very easily by contaminated poop.

Also, the baycox I use is a 50mg/mL strength and is dosed at 20mg/kg.

Hope this is helpful. Good Luck!!

If you are getting this from beardeddragon.co they used to have an anti-coccidial cleaning solution specifically for cage cleaning...

Thanks to everyone for your help:grin3

I've ordered the baycox, hopefully it will be here soon. Until then... Should I be feeding him any differently? Should his formula be diluted? Is there anything I can for for him to make him more comfortable? Sorry for all the questions.

Does the abdomen area feel normal when you gently touch it?

If I'm not mistaken, Bearded Dragon is NOT in the US.
When I have ordered from them, it took ~ a week or more.

I am not sure where they are but it is not fast. I am wondering if maybe another member has some they could send you and maybe you could repay in kind when you get yours.

I am now worried about it arriving in time too.

I would be so grateful it anyone could send me some and I would of course return the favor when I receive my Baycox from beardeddragon.

Petey completely recovered within days of taking the Baycox (thank you Milo's Mom!) and I made sure to finish the regime of once a day for 3 days and then repeat in a week. I completely disinfected everything, his cage, toys, bedding, everything. I used the professional strength disinfectant from the bearded dragon for his cage and toys and washed his bedding in bleach.
It's been a couple weeks now and all of a sudden, the smell of coccidia is back. It's such a distinct smell that I recognized it right away. However there is no sign that Petey (or Pablo) have coccidia. Their butts look totally normal and their poops are normal as could be.
Should I be worried that it's back simply based on the smell?

I would probably treat for coccidia again just to be sure. It is so hard to get rid of sometimes!

Ooops, I thought I responded a couple days ago... I've started Petey back up on Baycox again... Hopefully this round will kill the coccidia completely! Thank you for your help.
