View Full Version : It's not a squirrel, not a plane, it's a bird!

A cat showed up from the woods out of nowhere and it won't leave... The damn thing caught this bird tonight but we managed to save it. There was blood coming from its mouth and it was moving its beak almost like it was panting. Got it wrapped up in a shirt and used a syringe to give it a few drops of water. Don't see any blood anymore but it keeps falling over on its side when it tries to fly. Little guy can grab hold of your fingers with a death grip. It has perked up a bit and seems comfortable in the birdcage. It even pecks at you when you get your hand near it. That is more improvement than what it was doing earlier.

I put birdseed and water in the cage, made it a nest with a shirt down inside a bowl and it's just chilling in the nest. Anyone know any bird people close to me? I'm close to senatobia, ms and the drive to Memphis, tn is about 30 miles away. 263914

Awww, it looks like a chickadee :Love_Icon Poor sweetheart :Love_Icon Great save :hug First, keep her in a dark quiet spot...which I'm sure you're doing :grin3 I use a shoe box...then I do put natural things ...leaves, pine needles so it feels like it's not in a foreign place....just to let you know...don't give a bird water...they can aspirate very easily....I've done it before...before I knew not to :facepalm and everything was fine :thumbsup But just a heads up for "next time" :eek :grin3 A lot of times all they need is the quiet rest time :dono I would check in the morning...open the box and see if she flies away....unfortunately, a lot of rehabbers will put them down if their wing is broken :( she isn't holding it like a broken wing...so that's good...sometimes they fall over if there was neurological damage...but that could be a temporary thing too:great Hope she's ready to fly the coop in the morning :dance Thanks for saving her...and what are you going to do about the cat :shakehead I really feel bad for them...they are always being tossed out:sadness That's why there's such an epidemic of feral cats....and great losses in songbird populations :sadness Not to mention terrible deaths for our beloved squirrels :boohoo

From what I know, a cat caught bird needs antiobiotics ASAP. If I remember correctly you shouldn't syringe water in its mouth either, but I could be wrong.

I've asked Psychobird to stop in on this thread as she is my go to bird expert. She can give you great advice and yes that is a Chickadee.

I'm sorry, I meant to reply to this thread yesterday afternoon but I forgot all about it after getting the call about the squirrel that was attacked by the cat.

The little bird didn't make it. It stayed inside and we kept it comfortable until it passed early Saturday morning.

I really don't like cats. Ugh

I hope you can trap this cat and take it to the shelter. That sure will save a lot of wildlife in your area.

Yup! I would trap it and bring to non-kill shelter or release it far away from your yard!
