I know now that the acorns are not safe; what about Chestnuts? We also have a lot of Hickory nuts coming out.

You must be very with chestnuts. They are prone to mold. We have a few members here who do feed them to their squirrels, but they cut into them first to make sure they are ok. Hickory nuts are usually fine though. The wild squirrels here love them!
