I live in a pretty mild climate in California where it doesn't get to be too cool until November (50's). My squirrels will be 14 weeks old in the beginning of October. I would like to release at my moms house where it's much more secluded and tons of trees as compared to my house where there is a ton of traffic and I see dead squirrels all the time :sadness However my I won't be able to go to my moms as much because it's 45 minutes away. So I have a couple questions...

Should I even think about release this fall? I would prefer to do this because I think they will be less accustomed to me and my other pets (they don't see them much but occasionally they sneak in during feedings). Plus the boy has been more aggressive lately towards the female and I'm concerned about it getting worse.

Would having the cage outside at my place to get them use to the elements the moving it up to my moms later be too confusing?

And finally, should I just take the chance and do this whole process at my house and release at my house?

I'm really in no rush, but I want to be prepared :)

Kameroosky, I would absolutely NOT release at your home. Traffic and squirrels are a bad combo.

Considering the issues you are having with these 2 squirrels a release this fall is too early to decide. In moderate climates a fall release is certainly possible with the proper soft release methods. Would your mom be willing to feed them in a release cage for a week or two?

Yeah she will she said. Is two weeks enough time? If the winter ends up being as crazy as I've been hearing, I may just overwinter them.

Yes I usually put them in the cage and then open the door 1 or 2 weeks into their soft release. I think put food in the cage all winter long :)

Haven't had a bad thing happen yet :) and I'm in NY, so your kids should be fine in sunny, California

I agree with kcassidy, and I am 40mi south of her in NY. Released, with supplemental food & oversight is, in my opinion, far better than 6 months in a cage in a house. :)
