Hello! I am a rehabber in the NYC area, I work at an animal hospital where many people are constantly bringing in baby squirrels they find. I had recently obtained a 6 week old female with a cloudy , swollen right eye. I had multiple doctors evaluate her and they diagnosed her with glaucoma. They ruled out it being an abcess due to the fact she is not painful and the swelling has not gotten any worse. The doctor feels she can barely see if at all through her right eye. I am torn on what to do. Should I release her? ( The doctor had said over time the pressure behind the eye may worsen based on the squirrels stress and activity level in the wild ) Her left eye is perfect. I am unsure what my next step should be. I am personally unable to keep her. Besides her right eye. She is a healthy baby, ambulates well. drinks esbilac ( rodent block, henrys assorted nuts ) like a champ. Is their a squirrel sanctuary of some sort (sounds crazy but I figured id ask:grin3) any help would be much much appreciated :D
My second question/dilemma is, all together ( including the glaucoma lady ) I have 13 squirrels ranging from 6-9 weeks old with me in my house (ahhhhh). They are all kept in the same cage together and got along great. Unfortunately because as they have been getting bigger the cage is not the appropriate size for all of them , due to this, they occasionally fight ( no blood drawn/ wounds, more like nibbling ) I know they need more space- currently they are getting esbilac 2 times a day with access to assorted nuts, butternut squash, henrys , rodents blocks, blueberries etc ) - I have a soft release cage in my backyard and was planning on putting them out there together ( it s a good size, can fit about 4-5 people in it ) do you feel this is to soon ? I just know they wont fight with more space, I am just concerned on cutting them off the esbilac sooner than expected- would like to have them out in a week
last and final question :D
Outisde in the release cage I have 2 11wk old squirrels- they have been out there for about a week now. However, if I want the new 13 babies to go in there, Id have to release them next week ( giving them 2 weeks in the cage ) they open nuts on their own and eat very well ! im sure this is ok to release them at this age , I just like reassurance :D
thanks in advance for everyone who responds :D
have a squirrelly day :D
