It has been months and months since I have posted, but you know how it goes. You raise a few and release them and all your wilds are doing well. I had a wild last year that had a huge abcess on his head, it eventually healed with a nice hair part down the center of his head. I never saw any other squirrels with any wounds till eariler this year a small male on a wound on his side. As they are wild, I just try to make she they get pretty of food and water. It healed and started to grow hair. Then a few weeks ago, I saw adult female with what looked like an abcess between her shoulder blades. She doesn't live in my yard, but I always look for her and make she she has extra. Just 2 days ago, I remarked to my husband the scab had came off and it looked good, yesterday I remarked it looked really pink. I thought sunburn, but this is what it looks like today. She seems being doing well in general, but I don't know what to do, I thought about trying to catch, but I have so many, no way to get just her. I am worried is it contagious ie, like virus. 263375263376263377

Botfly!
I suspected reading your thread, the picture confirmed it!
Nasty botfly larva, they come out on their own, squirrel heals fine.
Generally don't harm the squirrel unless there is many or pressing
on something vital.

I have been watching the bot fly grow larger and larger every day, trying to estimate how much longer. I couldn't stand it any longer. I decided to set out a cage. I knew it would take constantly monitering to prevent the other 12 from getting in. I put it out went to bathroom and came back and she was in it. I thought it would be an all day affair chasing off others. I got my sleeve pads and leather gloves, she tried to bite me a couple of times, but it went well. I had everything ready, the breathing hole was large , I reached in with a pair of hemastats and it was hard to pull out. It came lose with a pop and I dropped it into a jar of alcohol , I cleaned the wound with peroxide, then saline and then antiboitic cream. I put her in a large cage with lots of food and water. She was so angry , the next morning I cleaned it again, it had went down almost overnight. I watched her all day, she sleep it the nest and ate high on the hog, but the growling was loud. This morning the wound looked great, so I opened the cage, she took off like a cliff diver. I thought I will never see her again, but this afternoon she was outside with the rest of them waiting for afternoon snacks. She didn't come close, she is missing a lot of hair. I know I could have waited and I should have in retrospect since my husband was out of town .:serene
