My baby is not doing well I just located a friend with Cipro and am going to drive over to get it. One of the administrators on here told me the dosages but also told me to be sure to give her a probiotic 2hrs before or 2hrs after dosing her. I'm sorry I feel dumb but what is a probiotic and how much should I give her? She is 51 grams.

Help please! I fear she may not be alive for much longer!

Probiotics are pills like people take that replenishes the 'good bacteria' in the GI tract. Hurry and get the Cipro. Let's don't worry about the probiotic right now. You could even use yogurt.

I gave NewSquirrelMom the dosing info.
The dose that should be given is 0.02 for the entire day.
If she wants she can dose twice daily, 12 hours apart in the amount of 0.01
She only has a dropper for tonight. I told her to dose
2 drops (loading dose) as I fear that if she waits for the syringes, it may be too late.

Edit: I agree don't worry about the probiotics now, just get the med into her. :thumbsup :hug

Now we pray. :grouphug

New SquirrelMom, you gave your baby the best chance she has by getting the Cipro. It has antimicrobial AND anti inflammatory properties.

I would still try to get tiny drops of hydration fluid into her but PLEASE be careful. I would rather see it roll out of her mouth than into her lungs.

When you give any fluid their head should be up and the tail down. Don't feed them on their back like a human baby because gravity will pull formula into the lungs.

Thank you all so much! This online community is so amazing! Please pray for my baby!!! I don't think I can handle it if she doesn't make it! Nothing I've ever cared for has ever died. I don't want to start now :(

She's had her medicine for tonight ... Now we wait. How long before I see improvements?

Cipro is pretty fast acting, I would say most likely within 24 hours you should see some improvement. :hug
Keep her as hydrated as you can, it's really important.

Ive heard mixed reviews on hydration. which is best? pedialyte non flavored, or home made recipes. the only thing i hate about buying pedialyte is it only comes in a LARGE bottle and I end up throwing the whole thing away bc it says you can only use it within 48hrs.

So far after giving Piper the cipro at 9pm last night she is already acting a little more like her old self. making little squeaky noises and squirming around more. I just hope she starts to put on some weight soon. Shes starting to look emaciated :(

Once again I cant thank everyone on this page enough. You all are amazing people and Im so lucky I came across this forum so I could come into contact with such wonderful and caring people. :Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon

Personal opinion, homemade hydration is best because it does not have the added chemicals of flavoring or dyes that pedilyte does. Pedilyte is also high in sodium which is why use of it after 48 hours is discouraged.

Keep up the good work NSM. :dance

It's a little early to start celebrating but 'a little better' is fabulous at this point. Get that second dose in Piper and by this afternoon I believe you will see a turn around.

Go Piper!! :tilt

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, I need Help ASAP. The 2 squirrels that I found, then named Nutty and Buddy seemed fine. Then Buddy (the smallest ones has been) bleeding from the anus. The area around the sphincter is bulging as well. I tried warm water and massaging the area. The bleeding is only getting worse. Any advice? Thanks.

I have started a thread for just you and your squirrels:
http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?51644-Help-with-2-babies-in-Utica-NY&p=1118077#post1118077

It is confusing to have this attached to another thread - we end up confusing babies. Please go to your new thread and answer the questions. :thumbsup

Cipro can be dosed 1 time per day or 2 times per day (half the amount).

Last nights dose was a loading dose which is a double dose. It gets the antibiotic levels up fast. I would definitely go with two doses today. You are in a critical time frame here and keeping the antibiotic level up is critical right now. Give half the amount that you gave last night (this morning). Another dose tonight. Please try to find a 1cc syringe for more accurate oral dosing of the antibiotic.

The hydration fluid is:

1 quart of warm water
3 Tablespoons of sugar
1 teaspoon of salt

Good Morning!

This is what I wrote (partially) to you last night I will explain it a little clearer.
I meant that the amount of 0.02 is for the ENTIRE day.
You can dose twice daily, but you will need to break the amount in half
and only dose 0.01
:thumbsup
Personally, I would dose her this morning again at 0.01 and then ~12 hours later at 0.01
Keeping you both close to my heart. :hug

"The dose will be 0.02 given ONCE a day, or if you want to dose twice daily the dose will be 0.01 12 hours apart.
Always give a probiotic when giving any antibiotic, give that 2 hours before or 2 hours after giving the antibiotic.
Do not give the antibiotic with formula. Calcium can reduce the absorption.
For tonight give 0.02 which is called a loading dose."

Edit: Oh I see that HRT4SQRLS already addressed this. :thumbsup

I wish I had seen this earlier!! I will give her another dose now! I was able to get a 1cc syringe from the pharmacist at my work today and Ive been in direct contact with a rehabber in my area. We have been texting for most of the day today and he is going to be stopping by later today to show me how to inject saline to help her.

Im so excited now that i have the medicine and the help of a professional I truly do feel like Piper has a fighting chance! :Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon

Ok so if I forgot to dose her this morning can i give her another full dose now? and try to do a split dose tomorrow? I was at work today and wasnt able to see these posts going on. Also you are saying not to give the antibiotic with formula. How long should I wait to feed her after I dose her so that the antibiotic can do it's job?

Thanks again!

How much have your given her so far?
Did you give the loading dose last night?
I would give her another FULL days dose of 0.02 NOW, and then 12 hours later give half that amount.
This is dosed a little one the low side so you would be safe doing that.
Feed the formula 2 hours before or after the antibiotic.
I will mark a syringe and show you where the mark should be for both.

Ok I gave her the loading dose last night around 9pm and that is all that i have given her. I have been in contact with Joe all morning and right now he has me feeding Piper every 20 minutes per 1cc taken or every 40 minutes if she is able to take 2ccs.

I got my fox valley formula in today when I got off of work. So that's what Im feeding her now.

I'm so glad that you got a hold of Joe! He's the best!
Watch that her little tummy doesn't get hard and bloated.
Are you hydrating her in between?
Are you giving her full strength formula?
Did you do a transition from what she was on to the FV?

You CAN give another loading dose now, and then in 12 hours give half that amount 0.01
The red arrow is where the mark should be for the loading dose and the green is for dosing twice daily.

Give the anitibotic NOW again. Even if she is on formula, I would give it. They say not to give them too close together as it hinders the absorption of the antibiotic. BUT if you are feeding that close for now, you have no choice. :thumbsup

ok i dosed her as best as I could but my syringe was not marked the same as yours. I was just sure to only give 2 tiny drops. Joe is going to bring me a dosing syringe so that I can accurately dose her in the future. But for now she did get some medicine
