Squirrels sucking on each others privates.

I have 5 squirrels that are about 7 weeks old. They have been sucking on each others privates and I was told this is normal because that's what the mom does to help them use the bathroom. But one of the squirrels is swollen there now and looks like its bleeding a little bit. What should I do? Should I separate him from the rest for awhile?

No, no this is not normal :sadnessMomma would lick/clean their genitals...this is because they are hungry and looking for momma's nipple....you do need to separate because they can do real damage ...irreversible damage...where the squirrel can no longer urinate :sadness

It is NOT normal although they will do it. It can cause a life threatening issue. You need to either separate them or put some type of cover on them like a baby sock Togo or a loose vet wrap skirt. Sometimes they will suck on themselves.

The penis will scab over and cause a blockage. You must keep the urethra open and remove a scab if it forms. You can use a tiny bit of triple antibiotic ointment or other non-irritating lubricant like mineral oil.

I would probably move their feeding up an hour and see if this helps.

Another thing you can do is wrap the little boy with vet wrap...sticks to itself not the fur...it's a type of sports wrap they sell at the drug store...make him a little loin cloth...but, keep watch and if it doesn't stay on ...or stop the sucking...remove him :thumbsup
