2 babies need expertise

neighbor brought me too babies today. they are probably 4 weeks maybe. They have hair including on the tail. very dehydrated. using electro stat made by Fox Valley. I always have stuff on hand.I am concerned. One of the babies has a very swollen penis. it was very red and crusty when the baby came to me. I thought its sibling was nursing on it and irritated it. but I cannot get the baby to Pee. now I'm worried because I've given fluids and started rehydratingbut the baby still will not pass urine or poop. His brother has. Have photos but can't figure out how to attach them. I might be offline. not well versed with technology. using my phone for this text.

SM, if the penis is irritated from suckling, it is probably scabbed over. You need to put warm damp compresses on his abdomen to soften the skin. I would even get a little mineral oil or other non-irritating lubricant to try to open it by gentle rubbing it. Does the bladder feel distended? It is critical that you get the urethra open.

I guess it's also possible that due to dehydration he hasn't produced enough urine to go but I would definitely rule out blockage.

Water. Never mix formula with the hydration fluid. hydration should be given separately and can be given in between feedings if baby needs both nutrients and hydration.

As far as sniffles, keep a good eye and ear on her, listen for clicking for the next several days! If you do not already have antibiotics on hand, start looking and get them ASAP so you are prepared. Just in case. You do not want to wait until after the pneumonia is confirmed and then have an unnecessary delay trying to find meds. :thumbsup

I have cipro, augmentin , amoxicillin, and bacterium. Baytril is the only one I can't seem to get. but I put the word out. the male with the swollen genitalia, appears to struggle and is very uncomfortable. could he have an infection in the penis.? He has voided but fights me when I try to stimulate him. I he still dehydrated. How can that be? I've been a little more cautious with him because of the urinary tract issue. anyway do you thinkI should consider starting him on some antibiotics, if so I'm I'm guessing cipro might work or bactrim right? those I've used on mine for ITI just not sure of dosage.
cipro I have 250 milligram and 500 milligram and 500 period bactrim I believe it's 960 and augmentin 875 amoxicillin, 175 of the clavulanate. I have photographs or can take another one if you think it would help. How do I attach them?thanks Skylar's mom

The Cipro is very close to the Baytril. I know Cipro is used for UTI's in people. I cannot tell you if you should start or which antibiotics would be best. Hopefully H4S will return as she is the go-to person as far as which antibiotics to use in which circumstances.

You may have to give the swollen boy more soaks, and I would separate them until and unless I knew what was causing the swelling (he could be suckling himself) since it can be fatal.

If you decide to start the Cipro, you can post a new thread with "Cipro Dosing Needed" to get more attention from those that provide dosing. You will need to provide the weight of the squirrel. :thumbsup If H4S returns she'll be able to help.

well the swelling in the penis is pretty bad. I can see the poor thing is uncomfortable. as a matter of fact if I put it down he's a bit shaky but will drag himself across the towel. the last time I was able to get him to pee was about 1 p.m. . and I've only gotten him to pee twice both times he was very vocal. not cries per se more like complaint. I was able to do the math from the last time I had to dose Skylar. the little one is 86 g. he weighs approximately 1/7 her body weight when I dosed her last. so I divided her dose by 7. I used the formulas that people sent me from the bo.ard the last time Skyler got sick. I haven't acted on it though. just trying to be prepared.. the swelling does concern me however just based on his actions and his refusalto let me touch it. He gets visibly upset . we don't know how long they were alone or how long without food or water. I can tell you their urine stinks. very potent.I have seen the baby try to lick it but has fallen over every time however on his side he can curl up and look like a hedgehog.anything's possible. I have most of the right items like formula I've got Fox Valley 32 - 40 and 20 - 50. mothering nipples and o - rings. I am prepared, just unsure of certain things. I don't want to use an antibiotic without cause. but I also know that urinary tract blockage as well as pneumonia can be fatal. and I'm not Seasoned when it comes to loss. In
my adult life I have yet to lose a baby.I just don't want to start now. so I worry a lot. I was up with them all night last night.

Make VERY sure that the little boy is not still being sucked on. He might even be sucking on himself. If it's his sister he needs to be separated. This can be life threatening. Because you say the urine has an odor I would start him on the Ciprofloxacin for a possible UTI. I will send dosing info in a PM.

I would put a suave like triple antibiotic suave on his penis. You have to keep his urethra open even if that means removing a scab. I would soften the scab with warm damp compresses. At first I recommended a lubricant just to keep it open but now I think the antibiotic ointment would probably be better.

If you haven already started I would use the FoxValley 20:50 that you have. I would dilute it 3 parts water to one part powder to start. If they do OK I would go to the usual 2 parts water to 1 part powder after a few feedings of the diluted. Watch for bloat. I used FV 20:50 successfully this year but others have had problems. The FV 32:40 was usually the one causing problems so I would not use that.

I noticed that you are using towels. I would remove them and use fleece or t shirts because the loops in towels can cause injury. I will send dosing info for the Cipro.
