I got a little Red that was found at the base of a tree in my area... HOORAY, my first real Red Rehab. Well Rosie is real, but SM was kind enough to let me have her when she got the call during the Spring Season.

This little guy seems to old to be "abandoned" but I think there is something wrong with his fingers and toes. He didn't run from the Finder, just sat at the base of the tree charging her.

Now I have him and he doesn't seem able to climb/hang on. He walks fine, but I put him on my shoulder under my hair and he promptly fell off. I caught him so don't worry, he didn't get hurt. But i've never ever had that happen before. Usually they love going up in my hair and squee's hang on for dear life. Thats why I thought something wasn't quite right. Loki is the first to be brought from tree to me :)

Anyone know of any reason why a baby couldn't use his feet properly? They seem to be very tingly and almost numb (so he says).

Also should I be trying to get formula in to him or is he at a weanable age. I haven't gotten a weight on him yet, I don't want to stress him more than necessary. I will at the next checkup. I did get a few pix though.

I would def. offer formula (after fluids). Perhaps some infant ibuprofen, in case there is some inflammation going on. Cutie!:Love_Icon

Is it just me or does his front fingers seem to have an odd "pitch" to them?
If you put your finger straight down into his palm does he try to
grasp your finger?

Yes he can grab with his fronts, but I agree something seems "off".

I've made a short video, what do you guys think?? yes he has feeling in his hind feet and can pull them out of my grasp.

Let me know if I need a better vid.

He seems to be favoring his hind end, almost a slight drag. Right?
Just watched it again. I would put him in a smaller cage, and restrict his climbing.
Wonder if he took a tumble out of a tree. :dono

Is he pottying ok? Maybe try some metacam for inflammation? Thinking spinal trauma/inflammation from a fall, perhaps?

Okay Nancy, thanks Pappas.

Yes he is definitely dragging his hind end. I'm also concerned about parasites. I have the video up on the FB rehabber's page and many are suggesting worming, which I think I will do.

I'll keep you all posted. Have I mentioned that I'm already IN LOVE with little Loki? Cuz I am :D

Aaaaaaak! What a precious little girl. We don't have reds in Virginia. We DO have fox squirrels in Iowa. Looooooove those big balls of orange fluff.

I don't know what happened but my little Loki, died this morning. He sleeps with me every night and last night was no different. He was fine all night. I got up this morning, came downstairs and set him in the cage while I went to go pee. All of the sudden I hear screaming and I come running back into the room and he is laying on his side. I pick him up and he is gasping for air and in less than a minute he was dead.

What happened???? Why? I'm so upset. I'm getting ready to go out and bury him, I just don't want to do it. I want him to wake back up.

This is so unfair.

I am so sorry!:grouphug:(

God's Speed little Loki.:(

I just saw this thread and I agree with Nancy that his rear end and hind legs looked "off". I am guessing that he took a fall and suffered some internal damage that finally claimed his little life. I do not think there was anything you could have done to prevent this.:grouphug

But he passed in warmth and comfort and safety and not alone on the ground somewhere thanks to your kindness.:grouphug
