View Full Version : Five Week Old Baby Boy..

I was blessed with a five week old baby boy (fully furred, eyes trying to open, and teeth in). I tried calling places around me to take him but was informed they don't take squirrels.
I have tried finding his momma, his dray, or another baby and have come up emty handed for three days now.
I initially gave him some pedialyte to hydrate him, and then moved him to diluted esbalic formula, and now he's eating approx 4.5-5cc of full strength (I fill the syringe with five, but he's such a messy eater I wind up wear his meals). I feed him every five hours, excluding the night where I give him seven hours, and gave him a deer antler to nibble on for extra calcium and such. It should be mentioned I add a little bit of heavy whipping cream to the formula, since several sights said that was required. I also make sure to feel his tummy as I feed him to ensure he's not bloating.
He's began peeing without me needing to swab his behind, and has pushed out two poop pellets (one when I first found him, and one last night that was smaller, and yellow brown with a little more brown than yellow and squishy). He knows as soon as his feet hit the napkin, it's time to open the flood gates lol.
Other than all of that, I give him a shirt to burrow into at night for warmth. He's been fine every night without a warm water bottle, but it hasn't been to cold here whether wise, either. He likes to eat and crawl into my bra and relax for awhile. Sometimes he'll twitch and such but I'm sure he's only dreaming. My friend (who is a vet tech) says he looks healthy, and everything is in order, but I just want to speak with people who know a little more about squirrels.
Is there anything I should be doing on a basis that I'm not already? Perhaps a rehabber I missed (I live in a LA suburb, and the only one I found was waaaaay to far for me to make a trip to, even if I had a car). I've been lurking on several rehab sites for all of this up to this point, so hopefully I'm doing okay. He seems happy!(or as happy as an orphan can be, as my mom states.)
Thank you!

:Welcome :Love_Icon Bless you for helping him and for finding all the correct info:thumbsup Honestly, the only thing I would do different is have him on heat...they really don't regulate their heat well. I just got a 5+ week old eyes open, teeth coming in...and she showed improvement immediately ....once on heat. Also, they like the warmth....I think they don't feel alone :sadness You could make a rice buddy...have you seen anything about them...basically you get a sock and fill it with dry rice...tie the end and viola :grin3 You heat it in the microwave maybe 20 sec at a time and then squish it around to get rid of any hot spots....you want it to feel warm to you...their body temp is 102, so they are considerably warmer than we are. I have my baby on a heating pad with the rice buddy....they will snuggle up to the rice buddy...like it's a warm body:Love_Icon I don't know if you have a heating pad....you need one that does not have the automatic shut off...it needs to stay on...it should be under the container your baby is in...not with him...and only under half the container...so he can get off the heat if he gets too hot:thumbsup I put a towel between the heating pad and the container so it won't get too hot....if you don't have a heating pad then you could use the rice buddy and heat it very often :dono if he's doing alright without it....I guess you can continue as you have...but you need to be the judge...I'd try the rice buddy and see if you don't see a difference in his behavior:thumbsup
As far as rehabbers in your area...we do have quite a lot of people willing to help....whether in your particular area I'm not sure...but one of the admins will look into it I'm sure :grin3
Oh and you do know the proper way to feed...so he doesn't aspirate...syringe below him...so he's looking down while feeding...that way nothing gets into his nose and lungs...:thumbsup Picture his momma laying on her side or back and he would be laying on her or up next to her...not under her...does that make sense...you probably are already doing it...but just in case :thumbsup Do not feed like a human baby :embar
Good luck :Love_Icon and if you have any questions...just ask :highfive :Love_Icon

I'd suggest you not use anything larger than a 3 ml syringe, 1 ml is even better. I know it means refilling the syringe (or having multiple available) but it is easy for them to get too much formula with the larger syringe and aspirate (formula coming out of nose). It gets even more difficult if the syringe starts sticking after a few days of use. Aspirating liquid will quickly lead to Aspiration Pneumonia which is deadly.
Just want to confirm you are using the powdered Esbilac and not the premixed canned version? They are different and the squirrel needs the powdered version with Pre and Probiotics (and the third ingredient will be “dried whey protein concentrate”.
Are you weighing him? That is the only way to verify he is getting the proper amount (not too much not too little) formula. He should get between 5% - 7% of his weight each feeding; for example a 100gm, squirrel would be fed between 5ml – 7ml.
It should be mentioned I add a little bit of heavy whipping cream to the formula, since several sights said that was required. I also make sure to feel his tummy as I feed him to ensure he's not bloating.
If you start to see any issues the first thing to do would be ditch the whipping cream. I usually only add that only after they have adjusted to the Esbilac (versus mommy) for a few days, but if he is doing well with it great!
He's began peeing without me needing to swab his behind, and has pushed out two poop pellets (one when I first found him, and one last night that was smaller, and yellow brown with a little more brown than yellow and squishy). He knows as soon as his feet hit the napkin, it's time to open the flood gates lol.
The dark brown poos are from mom’s milk and the Esbilac poos will be more mustard/brown/yellowish. If they get very light colored that us a sign of overfeeding.
Other than all of that, I give him a shirt to burrow into at night for warmth. He's been fine every night without a warm water bottle, but it hasn't been to cold here whether wise, either.
I too would encourage you to invest in a heating pad (set to low, under ½ of his container so he can crawl off if he gets too warm), one that you can set to not shut off automatically. While he is getting to the age he can beginning to regulate his own body temperature, if he gets cold it will create a lot of complications. And water bottles can rob him of heat if they are not kept warm!
Please do not use any linen type material or towels with loops, both are dangerous. You can use fleece, flannel or t-shirt material (in order of preference!).

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely be trying a rice buddy or two. I have a heating pad somewhere, I'm sure my mom wouldnt notice if i swiped it:rotfl Would a rice buddy and a heat pad be too much heat?
As for the syringe, I currently use a 3mil I believe and I do feed him in an upright position and watch for bubbles from his nose.
I avoid towels, but only have teeshirts as of now. I may make a wal-mart run today for fleece (and if you think theres something else worth picking up, by all means let me know!)
I feel like I'm on the right track here. My only fear is that, because I don't have other squirrels, he won't learn the 'squirrel language' and might not fit into nature afterwards. :sadness I want to release him, but if I have even the smallest doubt he'll fail to survive I won't. I know they can live up to twenty years in captivity, and some of the people I've seen with blogs say squirrels may great members of the family so I'm prepared to sell my life to this little fella if needed. I'll definitely be posting in that thread for a rehab center.
Thanks guys! You were all a lot nicer than those on Yahoo!Answers (wow were they a rude bunch).

It is best if they do not have, or you can disable, the auto-shut off.
Would a rice buddy and a heat pad be too much heat?
Yes, you will not need the rice buddy if you have the heating pad under his container (only 1/2 though so he can crawl off the heat if he gets too warm). But you could use a rice buddy (no need to heat up) as a "buddy" or grab a dog/cat/bird toy at Wal-Mart for him to snuggle with. No beads, beans, buttons or other things to swallow!

The cheap fleeces are just fine, and the T Shirt do in a pinch... but fleece is better!

Don't worry yourself about releasing a singleton (as we call them), they will do just fine if you follow the soft release process correctly. But do make certain the little one does not get acclimated to domestic dogs or cats and the like, they need to know these are threats! When he is older and nearing release age we *may* be able to hook you up with someone local that has experience (and even a release cage / area if needed).
Make sure those blogs are discussing grey squirrels (is that what you have?) and not Flying Squirrels. Healthy grey squirrels do not often make good pets. They are cute like a kitten, but often when they get to be around a year old (+/-) they can become unruly, even dangerous, as they hear the call of the wild (and hormones!).
Thanks guys! You were all a lot nicer than those on Yahoo!Answers (wow were they a rude bunch).

All good advice here. :thumbsup
I agree baby would still need heat.
Heating pad should be set on low, half under the container
he's in so he can move to the cool side if he gets too warm.
Have you gotten a weight on this baby?
Having a scale is essential to raising baby squirrels.
Squirrels are fed (and medicated if necessary) by weight.
They need to be fed between 5-7% of their body weight
each feeding.
As mentioned, use caution with that 3cc syringe.
We usually recommend using a 1cc to avoid aspiration.
If baby chokes, formula comes out nose, there is a risk.
If this should happen, immediately turn baby upside down
and try and drain any excess in the nostrils. You would also
want to listen for any clicking when he breathes for several
days afterward.

Okay so heres todays full update:
He's eaten three times today (every five hours, at 5cc) but at his 'lunch time' feeding he seemed like he was starving for more so I bumped him up to approx. 7cc just because he seemed so hungry. I made sure his tummy wasn't swelling or anything, and he's fine (just had a 5cc dinner). I was curious to know if I should bump up his feedings since he was so hungry and ate the extra with no swelling/bloating, or if its just baby nature to want to eat until they can't move?:sadness
Also, I made him a rice buddy and he adores it. Unfortunately I don't have a heating pad for night time use, so I may be waking up every hour or so to reheat the rice buddy. Oh well, gotta do what you gotta do I suppose.
I also have given him a fleece blanket. I made the blanket so it could be burrowed into and placed his antler and rice buddy in there. After dinner just now, he crawled in there and snuggled against the heat no problem.
As for potty time, I had to stimulate him 2/3 times today (I do it every before every feeding). He hasn't pooped today, so I'm kind of concerned. I got a pellet yesterday that was small, but not today. Are they suppose to have regular bowl movements? If so, how often? If he's constipated how would I go about fixing that? (Perhaps dilute the formula?)
He just, as I was writing, peeked his head out of the fleece blanket and then went back inside, so maybe the heat was too much? I don't know:dono
Sorry for all these random questions, I probably sound paranoid. I just want to make sure my little baby remains happy and healthy.
I'm going to post some photos of him soon, so you all can get a good look at him. Thank you again for all you guys help!:bowdown

Without knowing his weight to know what percentage (5-7% of body weight) he is eating makes this a hard call to know if your under feeding or over. Underfeeding is lacking nutrients, overfeeding can cause diarrhea.
Also, I made him a rice buddy and he adores it. Unfortunately I don't have a heating pad for night time use, so I may be waking up every hour or so to reheat the rice buddy. Oh well, gotta do what you gotta do I suppose.

Don't dilute the formula. Give him hydration in between the scheduled feeding times.

So I just weighed him with a mail weight we use for letters/packages. He came in at approx. 4.4 Ounces or 124.738 grams.
How do I find the percentage to feed him? And is that a healthy weight? Also, here is a photo of him from when I found him.262934
And then the same day, but a little later.

Oh he's precious....he's a Foxer :Love_Icon So sweet...you will give him 5 to 7 percent his body weight...so if he weighs approx 125 g... 5 % would be about 6 cc's or mL's (same thing) and 7 would be about 9 cc's....this isn't exact math...I don't have a calculator...but it's in the ballpark of what he should be eating:great He's beeeutiful :klunk

You guys are awesome! Thank you! (I'm a foreign language / linguistic major, so math is soon not my thing lol)
Since I fed him the 7cc's today and he was fine, I think I'll stick with the 7% mark. Thank you guys:D

That is wise and it's always best to gradually increase when you do.
As he gains and weight increases so will his percentages that's being fed.

EXCITING NEWS EVERYONE!
Today I woke up to feed him/warm his rice buddy. When I picked him up, I got a nice surprise.. An open eye! So far, its only one, but I've seen kittens do this a lot too where one will open a little later or the next day, so I'm not too worried for the other one (unless I should be?)
I bumped him up to 7.5cc's instead of a full 8. I filled my 3cc syringe and my smaller 2cc syringe however I'm now opting out of my smaller syringe entirely. My reason being is the plunger moves too freely and is hard for me to control. He sucked and had I not been paying attention, would have probably gotten way to much. Luckily, I caught it and he's okay. He presumed feeding just fine without aspirating. Since the 3cc is a bit 'sticky' its easier for me to control what he's getting.
Other than that I have no new news. After feeding, I put him back in his blanket with his rice buddy so I can go to sleep for a little bit longer.
Ohhhh this little guy has my heart aching. Look at that handsome eye!:Love_Icon262950

We're entering winter ourselves, but being in CA its just kinda pre-summer anyways lol. But I've read on those who permanently adopt a squirrel and none of them have regret it! Anything for my baby, though.

I actually just found a squirrel yesterday at about the same age. I bought the liquid ebsilac, because the pet store was out of the dry.. wil this suffice until I can get some from the internet in two days?
Also how often do you rub them to get them to goto the bathroom?

Hi foster
:Welcome to TheSquirrelBoard
Start a thread for your baby in the Nursery and we will answer all of your questions. :thumbsup
I am really not comfortable with the canned Esbilac. It seems to always cause diarrhea. It is not the same as the powder. The ingredients are not the same.
I would rather see you use the temporary goats milk formula until your Esbilac arrives.
You stimulate them to potty every time you feed them. :thumbsup
TEMPORARY GOAT'S MILK FORMULA:
3 parts goat’s milk
1 part heavy whipping cream*
1 part vanilla yogurt
Formula will last 48 hours in refrigerator.
Goat’s Milk
This can be purchased at natural food stores such as Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods, and at most health food stores that sell groceries. It is a product for humans. Do not substitute commercial formula made for baby goats or other livestock sold at feed stores.
Goat’s milk is available fresh in a carton; evaporated in a can; and as a powdered milk. If you purchase either the evaporated or powdered versions, please blend them with water according to the package directions before using to make the formula.
Heavy Whipping Cream
This is found in small cartons in the grocery store near the coffee creamers and half and half. Regular heavy cream may be substituted if it is unavailable, but the heavy whipping cream has the highest fat content, and is preferred.
Yogurt
Yogurt has beneficial bacteria in it that soothes and settles digestion. Full fat yogurt is best, and a good choice that is very widely available is Stoneyfield Yobaby yogurt. However if it is unavailable, a low fat vanilla yogurt may be substituted. Avoid those that have artificial sweeteners in them. Vanilla and banana are both popular flavors, and the sweet taste of the yogurt helps to convince the baby to accept it.
It has been recently discovered that very small pinky squirrels do better with the ESBILAC PUPPY FORMULA, with probiotics, instead of Fox Valley. If the Goat's Milk formula is used, omit the heavy whipping cream for the first two weeks of life.

From what I've read, no liquid formula. Only powered (though I'm not sure why). You may be able to find it at walmart, just make sure the first five ingredients are correct. Also, be sure he's hydrated.
As for potty times, I normally rub him with a warm que tip before every feeding.

I would just use the hydration formula...minus salt....I have to check, but it's something like 1 tablespoon sugar mixed with 1 cup warm water....make sure it's warm...you can give this between feedings. :great

Her pee was clear, and she pooped a brown pellet. When feeding her I freaked and thought she was bloated, so I pinched between her shoulder blades and I think she's slightly dehydrated.. It could just be my paranoid mother sense though..
And yeah, I said 'she'.. I uh.. Thought the vulva was a boy sack, but after a little comparison...
I got a little girl:great

Awwww.....congrats on the girl :crybaby :gigg It happens often....when they're little it's hard to tell :grin3 Well, it won't be anymore :highfive
Her urine being clear is a pretty good sign she's not dehydrated...have you checked through her bedding to see there are any poo pellets :grin3 Lovely being a squarent:eek if you're worried it won't hurt to give her the extra hydration...just as long as she continues to eat normally:thumbsup And I understand all about worrying...I'm a notorious "worrywart" we make the best parents :drama

So this morning she's perfectly fine. Ate a 7cc breakfast and *Drumroll* OPENED HER OTHER EYE*
I feel that I may be far to excited over this:jump
All my non-squirrel owner friends(so everyone but those here lol) are just baffled by my excitement. She's growing so fast!:bliss

Not to "damper" your spirits but in most States it is illegal to have wildlife, be very careful of all you let it be known to. All it takes is one, either them or someone they have told to place a call to the authorities and get your baby confiscated and euthanized . This is what normally happens due to authorities deeming them unable to be released back to the wild since they were kept by humans.

Yeah, and unfortunately I'm in one of those states. I'll be sure to keep a lid on it. Normally when I refer to her on SM I simply refer to her as "the baby".
I probably have people thinking I'm a teenage mom, but still. lol
