Hey Guys:

I have a few babies who are again (like my spring babies) really really small for their age. But little Serendipity is the smallest yet. She came in a month ago at 36g and now weighs 65g and her eyes opened this morning. She eats, pees/poops really well but doesn't seem to grow.

I have another male and female, they are brothers and sisters, who are also teeny compared to their siblings, but they are bigger than little Dippy.

Anyone else experiencing this? What is going on, are squirrels going to get smaller?

Thanks

My entire season has been taking in pinkies who died, except the few who survived, but between July 22-23 and now haven't really grown normally at all. Same thing as yours, Kim: 5-6 weeks old and 80-something grams. Ridiculous! I have no idea but nothing about this season surprises me anymore. If they all sprouted wings and turned into pigeons I don't think I'd blink an eye at this point.....:shakehead

Is there any formula additive that would safely add some weight to scrawny babies in the 5-6 week old range?:imp

Fox Valley Ultra Boost is an excellent supplement to add fat.

I thought you and Gayle had mentioned something about this. I was feeding 50/50 FV/Esbilac but everyone got diahrrea so I swtiched to 75/25 and they went back to normal poops. But these little ones, nothing makes a different. I have Ultra Boost and could give it to them but is that what I'm supposed to do?? At least I have a lot of normal fat/healthy ones or I'd start to wonder about my abilities

I made a video of the small kids and big kids here is the link http://youtu.be/vTRJHMjVyt8

Sorry that you are losing babies IR, that totally sucks!!

awww, Kim she looks so sad, like "I don't really feel so good....." :( Try the Ultra Boost, it may help. Is she on any type of med? I wonder if there's an infection in her system we just don't realize.....?

I was feeding 50/50 FV/Esbilac but everyone got diarrhea so I switched to 75/25 and they went back to normal poops.

Just wanted to ask if you switched to 75% FV and 25% Esbilac? It caught my attention since if this is the case it seems contrary to the "trend" this year away from FV and towards Esbilac... so I was hoping you would clarify?

Good question Spanky.
Kim are you using the FV 20/50?
Poor little darling, she looks so pathetic.
Have you tried GM?
Just throwing things out there.
Very bad year for sure.
Is she in with the others, or do you have her seperated?

Sorry I thought it was implied, 75 Esbilac / 25 FV.

I know, she is very pathetic. I haven't tried GM, what ratio do you all recommend? Her poops are fabulous so hate to upset her stomach, would it be okay to switch to GM?

She is truly the smallest compared to the others but she is not hte only small one. So not sure if it is truly a food issue or something else.

IR - I have no idea and I'm willing to try whatever you all recommend. Have you ever seen eyes open on such a small baby??

Nancy - she is in with her family, I watch her like a hawk and she gets very upset if I take her away from them. Believe me I'm watching. I don't want her to get trampled or hurt, but when I take her away by herself she won't settle.

Posting from my phone so I apologize for errors ahead of time. My babies are so tiny!!! How about 48g fully furred and eyes open? Chris suggested L Glutamine to help metabolize protein. Some have started to look a little bit better, but it is driving me nuts!
I too am curious about which is the 75% in your equation.

Her pics reminds me of Bean when she was a baby. Granted, they all had extreme digestion/diarrhea issues but she looked like a furry skeleton. We finally had her on ensure, plus being sub-q'd and then slowly worked her back onto formula (fv) but added acidopholus (I know I spelled that wrong) to the formula (I had capsules, I opened and mixed into each batch of formula) and they finally started gaining weight and stopped the diarrhea. Something is causing these babies to be almost like failure to thrive, as if they are not getting the nutrients from the food they need.

Gayle, I'll call you tomorrow if thats okay

3 cups of Esbilac to 1 cup of FV.

When I first started out it was 2 and 2 and they all had really loose stools so I switched it up and everything has gotten way better.

Well you've got me beat on smallest eyes open, WOW. I am realizing their eyes open more by date than size. So my little girl is 4 - 5 weeks so her eyes opened, but she is the size of a 3 week old :(

Oh I totally agree Kim. I did that with one little one that I had here, for the same reason.....the larger ones were disturbing her. She cried after about 5 hours apart. I quickly put her back in with them, sick as they all are, they want to be together.

In thought it was just me...

I got one 2 weeks ago.. Bout four weeks.. I got her sibling in.. She is thicker but not much bigger.

I have a host of small ones. I thought it was just me.. I have 10 weepers that are just 110 grams. I have ONE out of twelve that is normal size... Some of these came in from the wild like this.. Like the one ten week old who I am not sure how the finders caught her.. Wild as a buck but small.

Maybe pesticides? Pollution? Climate change?

I am not sure, my yard squirrels look plenty big, including babies born this year. Some of the adults are huge too! I checked my bag of treats for steroids because they are looking so swole! :grin3

So her eyes are closed again and they look like they are sealed up. She is starting to get loose stools, what the heck, nothing has changed in her diet at all. She is fiesty though.

I know in bunnies, eyes can open early due to trauma and then reseal (actually had it happen to one that came in a couple years ago). I would assume it can happen in squirrels as well?

Not the greatest picture but you can certainly see the difference. These two, Rocket and Dippy are siblings and the bigger one Rocket is also really small compared to everyone else.

And this one was just cute and I had to share :)
