I have a 5 yr old grey squirrel named Stuart. I've been feeding him commercial rodent blocks, veggies and occasional fruit and nut treats. I know that the rodent blocks aren't the best diet for him and have been searching for the right food for him. I've read lots on this forum about HHB, but would also like to know if anyone has any experience with Nut Squares from SuirrelNutrition.com? How do they compare nutrition-wise? My Stuart loves them and they seem pretty similar other than the cost...HHB is more expensive. Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated.

If I were you I'd contact Leigh at Henry's directly. She'd be the best person to share the differences between the two.

I've tried most of the blocks out there (not the ones you just mentioned though) and it drove me crazy. Some ate some, Others ate none, None ate all, and Everyone ate HHB's without question, even the wilds. My question was answered by the squirrels...

I did go read about the nut squares...the 1/2 cup of fruit puree is a bit questionable to me. That's a lot of sugar. And then he also went on to say his squirrels prefer peaches in heavy syrup...that's a huge amount of sugar.

I do not have any experience with their recipe either but I will share this.. I went to the site and was looking around. They have a scalded milk recipe as formula for baby squirrels: That in itself would keep me away personally. Just sayin'. :grin3

Edit: I will add that after seeing this I did not even bother to look at the nut square recipe... I had seen enough (again, just my prejudice).

:thumbsup Milo's Mom & Spanky hit it on the head -- couldn't agree more!
That guy is very visible on the internet but is often very WRONG, in my opinion. Anyone who pushes scalded milk vs Esbilac or Fox Valley for squirrels is irresponsible and being stupid for the sake of cheapness. Scalded milk is cheap. Squirrel squares are cheap. Formula and HHB's are not cheap.

Squirrel lives are not cheap, and shouldn't be considered so. :)

Thank you IR! I did not even look around on the site - just for the squares....scalded milk? WTF? Who the heck still does this? OMG! Grrrrr!

Allicatt - please, if you want the best for you squee, get the HHB's. I know they cost more, but if you're going to spend money, why not spend it on the very best?

Thanks for the sound advice! Thankfully, when Stuart was a baby, I followed another's advice for formula. I know everyone has their own opinion of which formula is best. I personally used a 50/50 solution of Esbilac and heavy whipping cream. Stuart is now 5 and going strong, even if I did feed him Kaytee Pro Health Forti Diet for a while. But no more! Thanks again to all!
