I'm typing this for SquirrelsAreMe.
Maxine is dying. She's 38 grams, one dose of prednisone this morning per Sammy's Mom's instructions. Head tilt backwards, gets off heat, won't stay in the pile, removes herself from it.
Any suggestions welcomed, but this little one is not doing well.
Eyes are closed, she has scratch marks on her, was knocked out of her nest by the windstorm yesterday, and spent most of the day cold and down. She barely has any fur.

Hopefully a more experienced rehabber will get with you soon. My only advice is to keep the baby warm and hydrated. SubQ would be best, but barring that- a glucose solution at very regular intervals. A few drops every 15-20 minutes for the first hour or two, and then every half hour until you're sure the baby is hydrated. Even if the baby was eating formula before, at this stage I doubt her body can process it.
The scratches mean she probably needs an antibiotic. Please ascertain what antibiotics are available so that someone here can provide a dosage.
I'm afraid that's the best I can offer. Hopefully you stay in touch with Sammy's Mom and can work through this. Best of luck~ keep everyone updated.

SquirrelsAreMe is sitting on the bed, helping us, so we've got help. I'll let her post an update under her own account when she gets home.

I don't know the story behind Maxine so my response will be kind of general.
When I have a baby that crawls off the heat I put the entire container on the heat...this gives them one option to get away from the heat...they have to crawl up through the blankets.
I also give them a drop of molasses every so often...keeps the blood sugar up. It's more of a pure sugar than food and they respond to it much much faster. Like 30 seconds fast! Just a drop in the mouth on the tongue.
Throwing the head back...I'm assuming this is why she's on Pred. It could also be seizure activity.
The best general cover your butt med would be Baytril....it covers a lot of bases.
That's about all I've got. Good luck!! :grouphug

SquirrelsAreMe says:
How much Batril for a 38gram? (She's not at home so doesn't have the dose).

I am logging off. I have to be up in 3 hours and 15 minutes to feed.
Just make sure she stays on the heat, keep her hydrated, and do the molasses. Doing the molasses has shocked the heck out of me a few times...they suddenly are "ok". They are not really ok but it buys you some time to figure out what's going on.

Roger that. Passing it on to SquirrelsAreMe, since we aren't qualified to handle something like this. Thanks for all the help, folks.

Big injuries on tiny ones are so hard to assess... tell her i am praying and she is way better than she thinks she is. She has good instincts and just has to trust them.:Love_Icon

Quick up date Maxine made through her second night. Thanks for all the help last night . She in now in her own bed all the way on heat. And I started her on baytril. A little history on her, we had a huge storm Saturday the finder had her for about 5 hours before seeking help she was in a box with a lamp over head no hydration no blankets just on a towel . When I picked her up her head was extended backward and all limbs were straight out . Got her warmed up with 4 others I pick up that night . She was always crawling off the heat and away from the pile .

If she just ate this baby should be showing a milk line waist and
if that's it in it's chest area that just might explain why the
discoloration. Did this just happen, happens when fed??
Are you feeding according to weight, her stomach is too far extended
even for just ate.

I think her belly looks to extended because of the way she was being held . I feed her according to weight she weighs 36 g and I give her 2 cc per feeding every 4 hours. I also give her 1 cc of water every 2 hours. She has been on full heat and is always dehydrated between feeding. I am concerned because her milk line is only half way on the belly and the rest is dark.

Here is a new picture of her tummy I feed her a hour ago. But her tummy still looks dark . I put her back in the pile of other babies to see if she will say warm, and she moves off the heat, how long can she stay on full heat?

As long as she needs to. As long as it doesn't get TOO hot it is not going to hurt her, and getting off of it at her age will.

Blue or darkness in the lower belly is very often backed-up poop. This girl may need to really focus and get all her poops out -- have you tried a warm water soak and extra stimulation?
ALSO: do you see any black/blue under her chin and in the throat area? Just curious.....

I did try to put her in with there other babies and she snuggled for a while but she will move away from them so I put her back in her own cage full on heat again ,

No black/ Blue under chin or throat . I will give her a good soaking after work tonight. Her poop is black in color. The other four babies I got on saterday are all popping the golden color we love to see.

So this is how our day goes I weigh her every morning so I know how much to feed. She gets esblic formula then a hour later she get water and today I started subQ fluids the next hour. Then formula water subQ I have been repeating this all day as she get so dehydrated . Should I stop the formula and go back to pedilite for the next 24 hours ? She is also on prednisone and baytril .

OK good -- maybe it is just backed-up poop. The reason I ask is that I have seen this awful syndrome this season with pinkies beginning to bleed internally after 2-3 days with me. My research so far has taught me that certain anticoagulant rat poisons can be transmitted to babies in utero, and later in their mother's milk. Typically they would go black & blue from under the chin down the whole front of their bodies. :sadness

I will be soaking her as soon as get home and see if this doesn't help. The reason she looked so bloated is because I had her back pushed out so you could see the blue / black I her tummy.

Could it be a bruise, as it looks much smaller in the second pic you posted. Logan pooped the dark poop for a long time, much longer then I would expect. He had a bruise/hematoma when he came in that covered a very good portion of his belly. He is finally doing lovely golden nuggets. Hope your little one will get better. This is proving to be a very tough baby season.
