View Full Version : Back feet dragging, anything I can do?

So earlier this evening I was out on a walk and heard some rustling in a nearby bush. I always carry a few almonds on me in case for chance encounters, and I'm really glad I had some this time.
I discovered the noises were from a squirrel that visits my patio, and he was dragging one, possibly both of his feet. I got a good glance of his underside and I didn't see any evidence of blood or a wound.
It seems this is a classic symptom of MBD, but he's at the very least a juvenile - is it even seen that much in wilds? Is there anything that can be done? My guess is no, but I love the fellas so much I felt like I should at least ask the question.

Mbd is pretty much unheard of in the wild and is very unlikely.
My opinion is he either took a fall or maybe got bounced off a tire with possible back injury. He really needs to be brought in and treated, there are meds that have been quite successful with many reducing swelling and regaining use of their legs.

That's great news, I will do my best to locate the poor fella. I suppose using a humane cage trap is the best way?

I went and purchased a trap for large squirrels, but still no sign of him/her. At least now I am prepared if another appearance is made.

I live right next to work and spend about an hour at home for lunch, and sometimes I will prop open the front door in case one of my squirrel friends stops by.
Today the injured fella came by! I was so glad to see he was still alive. I wasn't sure if he was friendly last time because he was injured, or if because he was one of my regulars.
I got another look at his hind leg and it's clearly in rough shape at this point, he's been putting weight on his haunch and it's causing scapes and redness.
I have a trap ready and am going to bring him in if I can find a resource to take him.
