Tried to convince husband to make an indoor/outdoor connection from my squirrel large outdoor porch room to a window coming in. But, he is willing to build a cage for inside the house for the winter months. Trying to decide if should cage her indoors for the winter or let her adapt to seasonal changes. Thought if we could see some pics of cages that your babies are content and happy in, maybe Snickers would be ok with staying indoors esp at night or when freezing outside. He can build if can see what look like.

Also forgot to ask- if your squirrel does become mostly an indoor pet in the winter months, what temperatures can they tolerate for playtime outside and for how long? What would be lowest temp? I know they have their fur , but just wondered if they become accustomed to a 70 degree house, and it's 30 outside for the high, is this harmful to them?

This isn't an indoor cage but can be built and placed inside. You wouldn't need the double entry like you see in the pics. We bought a pet door and framed it in sideways to make it easier to place food on the shelf right next to it.
It would help if he put wheels on it so you could move it to make cleaning easier and a slot on the bottom you could slide a tray in and out of also.
Or you could just buy a cage but having one built would be much bigger. Hope you get lots of ideas!

This is my indoor/outdoor cage and also my small release cage. We built it so that I could roll it in and out of the house. It's nice for overwintering in the house and I've also released from it (we did add a release portal, but it was after these pics were taken).

Wow, those are both really nice DIY cages! :thumbsup
Here is a commercial cage that I use, it is pretty nice overall. CritterNation 2 level. You could add a third level but it would be too tall for most doorways. The caster wheels make moving it around MUCH easier! Currently unoccupied.

I started a thread about my eastern grey Mystique. We have an indoor/outdoor set up with a portal. The outdoor cage is on the balcony that the window of her room connects to. http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?50795-Meet-Mystiique-I-will-not-be-releasing-her-so-please-tell-me-your-stories/page2 I found it helpful to buy a rabbit hutch with a run and line the whole inside with hardware cloth. The squirrels chew through wood so even the hardware cloth it comes with needs to be reinforced. There are some really cute one you can buy on line. We built a plain box cage to put the whole set up on top of so she would have a lot of vertical crawl space and room for a cat tree or branches.

These are great!! The dimensions, accessories and levels are just what he needs to see. He's willing to build anything, as long as I don't make him tear up the window to connect this to the porch/room lol! So thank you again for taking the time to post these :)! Do you still let your squirrels play outside for sunshine (in enclosures ) if it's not below freezing?

Thank you. It's worked really well and I now wonder how I did without it for so long.

Love all these cages! Some really great ideas and designs :thumbsup :bowdown I would really love to incorporate the indoor/outdoor myself....I could just open a window in my squirrel room and let them out...I would want to be here when they are outside. I'm just not sure if I'd be able to get them back in :eek :grin3
Snicker Bar ....when we first built our squirrel room...which really is a Florida room type space....I would open a window every morning and sit with Baby....I'd be in pj's, robe and under a blanket :tilt It was cold....she was fine....it would be open about an hour to an hour and a half :dono never bothered her, temps were as low as 20's....now she just doesn't seem to like the window open (screen in it) so I don't open it anymore. One momma takes her boy out every day...when it's really cold (teens etc.) she may only leave him out for 10 mins....she worries about taking him out in the cold...but he insists :tap
So yes I think it would be fine :great
